Introduction To
Li-fi Technology
Li-Fi, short for “Light Fidelity,” is a
derivative of optical wireless
communications (OWC) technology,
which uses light from light-emitting
diodes (LEDs) as a medium to
deliver network, mobile, high-speed
communication in a similar manner
to Wi-Fi.

The term was first introduced

by Harald Haas during a 2011
TEDGlobal talk in Edinburgh.
LiFi works by capturing data in modulated light frequencies of a solid-state LED
light source, which is then transmitted and received by LiFi-enabled devices. A
photosensitive detector demodulates the light frequency signal and converts it
back into an electronic data stream, allowing for faster-than-ever, bi-directional
wireless communication. This process is incredibly secure since light waves can’t
penetrate walls or objects, making it difficult for unauthorized parties to intercept
the data stream.
The technology works by using LED light bulbs to
emit light pulses that are invisible to the human eye.
Within those pulses, data can travel to and from
receivers. Once received, the data is collected and
interpreted by the receivers. This process is similar
to decoding Morse code, but it operates at a much
faster rate – millions of times per second.

Unlike WiFi technology, which uses radio

waves to transfer data, LiFi takes a
revolutionary step in wireless
communication by embedding and
transmitting data in visible light beams.
Implementation
Li-Fi is implemented using white LED light bulbs at downlink
transmitter.
By fast variations of the current, optical output can be made to vary at
extremely high speeds.
An overhead lamp fitted with an LED with signal processing technology
streams data embedded in its beam at ultra high speeds to the
photodiodes.
A receiver dongle then converts the tiny changes in amplitude into a an
electrical signal, which is then converted back into data stream and
transmitted to a computer or mobile devices.
advantages
1)Speed-Transmission speed would be much higher than that of
Wifi transmissions.For e.g-10 to 20 Gbps
2)Installation Lifi could be used in certain places sensitive to
electromagnetic areas, such as airplanes or hospitals, without causing
interference.
3)Cheap to Implement-It would be enough to incorporate modulators to
the lights and to include the necessary receivers in the devices.
4)Security–Li-Fi Internet is available only to the users within a room and
cannot be breached by users in other rooms or buildings.
5)Energy Saving-There is great amount of energy reduction in lighting industry
which uses Li-Fi based devices.
Li-Fi Vs Wi-Fi
Application Of Li-Fi
Lifi can be used:
In Aeroplanes
Under Sea Explorations
Traffic Lights
Car Headlights
Offline and Home Premises
Office Purpose
Hospitals and Health Care Security
Future Development
Lifi technology has been in development for a decade and many
lifi products have been created since its inception.
Right now,Lifi cannot fully replace Wifi as a connectivity device.
There are several companies that are wonderng hard on
developing lifi products and marketing Lifi as the primary
wireless technology.
Street lamps would be soon used to provide data.
It is predicted to make its way into smart homes.
With its speed and security and demand for fast internet
access,Lifi is set to be a game changer in the world of wireless
communication.
The future of the iternet looks bright with potential of Lifi
technology.
limitations
1)Limited area-Light waves are not able to pass through opaque
obstacles, such as walls, so they would have range limitations.
2)Range-Light beams do not have a long range (about 5 to 10 meters).
However, as in the case of overcoming obstacles, sensors could help
increase distances.
3)Interruption-Other sources of light may interfere with the signal. One of
the biggest potential drawbacks is the interception of signals outdoors.
Sunlight will interfere the signals, resulting in interrupted Internet.
4)Cost consuming-A whole new infrastructure for Li-Fi would need to be
constructed.
5)Selection of Li-Fi over Wi-Fi-It will take coordination from different
businesses and areas to advance mass selection of this innovation.
With the emergence and development of LiFi technology, many
foreshadow the obsolescence of wifi and other wireless
networks. The possibilities are numerous and can be explored
further. In spite of dissadvantages if this technology can be put
into practical use, every bulb can be used something like a Wi-Fi
hotspot to transmit wireless data and we will proceed towards
the cleaner, greener, safer and brighter fututre. We will have to
wait a few more years to see if streetlights, in addition to
illuminating our streets, will connect us to the internet at the
speed of light.
