Contactor Management

Question: What are the negative aspects of the computer manufacturing organization’s contractor management,
associated with the maintenance activity?

Answer: These are the negative aspects of the computer manufacturing organization’s contractor management which
are associated with maintenance activity:

1. Overburden on PTW issuer:


One of the negative aspects that associated with maintenance activity is the PTW issuer being so
overwhelmed with the overload that day. He issued 75 permit to work in a single day. This indicates the lack
of proper resources for well organized PTW management.
2. Not specific Risk Assessment:
The permit issuer is an experienced person he told the hazards and the risks for the task which contractor
have to be understand. But he can skip the physical check of work area, the contractor wanted to know and it
was their concern but due to busy schedule the issuer ignored it which is a sign of improper risk assessment.
3. LOTO system overlooked:
The supervisor issued an order to separately placed the machine in other area and applied LOTO system
(Locked Out and Tagged Out) so that it prevents from using until the maintenance has done. But its orders
don’t have any follow and machine is not isolated. This indicates incomplete information or lack of follow up.
4. Lack of Technician:
When the contractor arrived at the workplace, the light which is hanging above the machine stared flickering.
The contractor raised issued on it to maintained it but there was no person available to check the fluorescent
tube. This indicate that organization don’t have any technician available.
5. Insufficient Documentation:
The supervisor wanted to see the risk assessment and method statement documents but the contractor fails
to provide them because he forgets to bring it with him. This indicates a clear-cut negative aspect of lack of
proper planning and proper documentation.
6. Lack of Activeness:
The supervisor present at that time looked so confused and stressful that he allows the contractor to start
their work without considering it important to complete the paper work first and then allowed him to work.
There raised a concern might the contractor have proper documentation or not?
7. Absence of Specific Operators and Supervisor:
Contractor have told that he did not saw the again after supervisor allowed to stated the work. Contractor
has some concern about the machinery he wanted to asked some queries about machine but there was no
machine operator neither the supervisor whom told them about queries. This indicate the lack of proper
supervision in the organization which is a negative aspect.
8. Self Assumptions:
Due to lack of proper information the contractor made assumptions by himself where necessary. The
contractor completely relies on the assumptions about machine that give clear cut information that there
was lack of proper guidance and oversight.
9. Self-blame:
The contractor considered it was their own mistake which caused them to suffer in pain. But it was the duty
of top management to provide safety to every worker and contractor working in their organization. All this
happens due to lack of clear safety protocols and not proper support.
10. Poor Communication:
There was poor communication between the contractor and supervisor. Supervisor didn’t provide adequate
information which was most in this case and he didn’t follow the rules of How to Select the Contractor.
