1. A 4 kg mass is resting on a table.

A string is attached to the 4 kg mass and passes

over a frictionless pulley and is connected to a 5 kg mass hanging over the side.
If the coefficient of friction between the table and the 4 kg mass if 0.3 find;
A) The acceleration of both masses
B) The tension in the string

5 kg

2. A 2 kg block is initially at rest on top of a frictionless ramp. The ramp is inclined

at an angle of 60 degrees with respect to the horizontal and is sitting on top of a
table. The surface of the table is also frictionless and it is 1 meter above the floor.
The block is released and it slides 4 meters down the ramp, across the table and
flies off the table onto the floor.
A) Find the speed of the block when it flies off the table.

3. A horizontal force F=60 N pushes a 3 kg block up a ramp. The ramp is inclined

at an angle of 30 degrees to the horizontal and the coefficient of kinetic friction
between the block and the ramp is 0.25.
A) Find the acceleration of the block up the ramp.

F=60 N

4. A force F = 3iˆ + 4 ˆj acts on a 5 kg object initially at rest at the origin. The x and
y axis are in a horizontal plane and the object slides along a frictionless surface.
A) Find the acceleration of the object in the x direction.
B) What is the velocity of the object in the x direction after 4 seconds?
C) How far does the object travel in the x direction in 4 seconds?
D) Find the acceleration of the object in the y direction.
E) What is the velocity of the object in the y direction after 4 seconds?
F) How far does the object travel in the y direction in 4 seconds?
G) What is the velocity of the object after 4 seconds? Write your answer in
component form.
H) What is the velocity of the object after 4 seconds? Write your answer in
terms of magnitude and direction.
I) What is the displacement of the object after 4 seconds? Write your
answer in component form.
J) What is the displacement of the object after 4 seconds? Write your
answer in terms of magnitude and direction.

5. A 20 kg mass is suspended from two cables as shown below. Find the tension in
the two cables. One cable makes an angle of 60 degrees with the ceiling and the
other cable makes an angle of 30 degrees with the ceiling.

20 kg
6. In the diagram below a force F is applied to a block initially at rest. If θ= 30
degrees and S is 1 meter how big does F need to be for the block to cover the
distance S in 2 seconds? The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and
the floor is 0.4 and the mass of the block is 6 kg.

7. In the diagram below block A has a mass of 2 kg and block B has a mass of 4 kg.
A) Assume the floor is frictionless and find the tension in string 2 and the
acceleration of the blocks if F=20 N.
B) If the coefficient of static and kinetic friction between the blocks and the
floor is 0.5 and 0.2 will the blocks move? Justify your answer.
C) Using kinetic friction find the acceleration of the blocks and the tension in
string 2.

8. In the diagram below the mass of the block is 4 kg and the ramp is inclined at an
angle of 60 degrees.
A) Find the minimum force F that will keep the block from sliding down the
ramp if there is no friction between the block and the ramp.
B) Find the minimum force F that will keep the block from sliding down the
ramp if there is friction between the block and the ramp and the
coefficient of static and kinetic friction is 0.8 and 0.5.

9. A coin is sitting on a turntable 50 cm from the center. The turntable has an

angular velocity of 1.2 Rad/s. How big is the force of static friction acting on the
coin? The coin has a mass of 50 grams.

10. A rock is tied to the end of a string and swung in a vertical circle. The tension in
the string when the rock is at the bottom of the circle is 50 N larger than the
tension in the string when it is at the top of the circle. What is the mass of the
rock?
11. An astronaut weighs 500 N when standing on the surface of the Earth. How much
would he weigh if he were a distance of 2 RE from the center of the Earth?
12. Planet X has a mass of 5 x1020 kg and a satellite is in orbit around planet X. The
satellite is 10,000 meters from planet X. How long does it take the satellite to
orbit the planet?
