Newton’s Laws Sample Problems

1. A 750.0-kg boulder is raised from a quarry 125 m deep by a long uniform chain having a
mass of 575 kg. This chain is of uniform strength, but at any point it can support a
maximum tension no greater than 2.50 times its weight without breaking. (a) What is the
maximum acceleration the boulder can have and still get out of the quarry, and (b) how
long does it take to be lifted out at maximum acceleration if it started from rest?

2. A picture frame hung against a wall is suspended by two wires attached to its upper
corners. If the two wires make the same angle with the vertical, what must this angle be if
the tension in each wire is equal to 0.75 of the weight of the frame? (Ignore any friction
between the wall and the picture frame.)

3. A man pushes on a piano with mass 180 kg so that it slides at constant velocity down a
ramp that is inclined at above the horizontal floor. Neglect any friction acting on the piano.
Calculate the magnitude of the force applied by the man if he pushes (a) parallel to the
incline and (b) parallel to the floor.
4. Two 25.0-N weights are suspended at opposite ends of a rope that passes over a light, frictionless
pulley. The pulley is attached to a chain that goes to the ceiling. (a) What is the tension in the
rope? (b) What is the tension in the chain?

5. In Fig. E5.2 each of the suspended blocks has weight w. The pulleys are frictionless and the ropes
have negligible weight. Calculate, in each case, the tension T in the rope in terms of the weight w.
In each case, include the free-body diagram or diagrams you used to determine the answer.

6. A75.0-kg wrecking ball hangs from a uniform heavy-duty chain having a mass of 26.0 kg. (a) Find
the maximum and mini mum tension in the chain. (b) What is the tension at a point three fourths
of the way up from the bottom of the chain?
7. A book is placed on a table. The book remains at rest until someone pushes it. If the book is
pushed with a small force, it moves a short distance and stops. Explain the forces acting on the
book and why it stops.

8. A block of mass 5 kg is placed on a rough inclined plane that makes an angle of 30∘ with
the horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface is 0.2
The block is released from rest.
(a) Find the acceleration of the block down the incline.

(b) What is the minimum coefficient of static friction that would prevent the block from
sliding down the incline?
9. Two masses, m1=4 kg and m2=6 kg, are connected by a light string that passes over a
frictionless pulley. The system is released from rest.

(a) Determine the acceleration of each mass

(b) Find the tension in the string.

10. A person of mass 75 kg75 stands on a scale inside an elevator. The elevator starts from rest
and moves upward with an acceleration of 2.0 m/s², then moves at a constant velocity, and finally
decelerates at 1.5 m/s² before coming to a stop.

 (a) What does the scale read during the upward acceleration?

 (b) What is the reading when the elevator is moving at constant velocity?

 (c) What is the reading during the deceleration?

10. Two masses, m1=2 kg \ and m2=3kg, are connected by a light string over a pulley with a
mass of 0.5 and a radius of 0.2 m. The pulley is not frictionless, and it has a rotational
1
inertia I=2 MR²

 (a) Find the acceleration of the masses.

 (b) Determine the tension in the string on both sides of the pulley.

11. Two blocks, m1=4kg and m2=6kg, are connected by a light string over a pulley. The block
m1 is placed on a rough horizontal surface with a coefficient of kinetic friction 0.3, while
block m2 hangs vertically.

 (a) Determine the acceleration of the system.

 (b) Calculate the tension in the string.

 (c) Find the frictional force acting on m1

12. A worker pushes a 25kg crate across a rough floor with a horizontal force of 150 N. The
coefficient of kinetic friction between the crate and the floor is 0.2.

 (a) What is the acceleration of the crate?

 (b) If the worker continues to apply the force for 10 seconds, how far will the crate have
moved?

13. Two blocks, m1=3kg and m2=5 kg, are connected by a light string and placed on a
horizontal frictionless surface. A horizontal force of 40N is applied to the first block (m1)
in the positive x-direction.

 (a) Determine the acceleration of the system.

 (b) What is the tension in the string connecting the blocks?

14. A 10kg box is pulled up a frictionless incline that makes an angle of 25∘with the horizontal
by a force of F=80N applied parallel to the incline.

 (a) What is the acceleration of the box?

 (b) If the box starts from rest, how fast is it moving after traveling 6 m6 \, \text{m}6m up
the incline?

15. A 1200kg car is towing a 900kg car with a horizontal tow rope. The cars start from rest,
and a forward force of 2000N is applied to the first car. Assume friction is negligible.
