Time is up! Let us discover if your answers are correct as you go into this module.
Let us embark on our voyage in learning Human-Environment Systems. Are you
Ready? Let’s GO!

What I Need To Know

The theories and approaches presented in this lesson will discuss the
intersection of the socio-economic and bio-physical systems and the impact of their
interaction in the society and the environment.
At the end you are expected to:
▪ Develop a critical perspective in understanding complex socio-
environmental problems, such as disasters, using an interdisciplinary
approach.

The quarantine brought by COVID-19 pandemic required us to stay at home. As
the result, our environment was rebuilt to its natural beauty and health. Can we

sustain the beauty and health of our environment that we have done after the
pandemic? Formulate laws that will foster and safeguard our environment. Write
your answers in a separate piece of paper.

What Is It

According to the socio-environmental systems perspective (also known as

human-environment systems), the holistic study of society must involve the analysis
of the interaction between the natural and social environments. It is also
examining the interaction of the multidimensional aspects of human activities that
impact the environment. This perspective overlaps with other related approaches,
namely human ecology, social medicine, and Eco health.
Proponents of the socio-environment systems approach rejects the idea of
separating the ecological and social spheres in understanding human society. They
also reject reductionist views, or the oversimplification of complex phenomena by
adopting a one-dimensional analysis.
One example of reductionism is treating the phenomenon of chronic hunger
as a mere medical condition, even though this problem also has inherent social,
political, and economic dimensions. The socio-environmental systems approach
argues that people’s health condition is influenced to a large extent by their
natural, physical, social, and economic environments. Health outcomes and
diseases, therefore, do not exist in a vacuum.
When investigating disasters, this approach does not rely on a purely
geological standpoint. It also involves other fields or disciplines such as economics,
psychology, and demography to understand the multidimensional effects of
disasters. Whether natural, human-induced, or a combination of both, disasters
bring about economic, political, cultural, and psychological impacts that interact
with each other and expose the populations to various kinds of risks and
vulnerabilities.
Multidimensional Impacts of Disaster
ASPECT IMPACT
Economic Businesses and economic activities are brought to a
standstill
Political and Governance and basic social service delivery are
Administrative compromised
Cultural Cultural activities and practices are interrupted
Psychological Disorientation and depression become common among
disaster victims and even among some first responders and
service providers
Medical Outbreaks of diseases and compromised immune system
become prevalent among the vulnerable population

Sense of Place

A place is a source of people’s collective identity and memory. It serves as a

“stage” where people perform their economic, political, religious and cultural
activities. The place can influence the community’s ideas and practices and in
turn, the people and their lifeways can also contribute to the place’s development
or decay.
The socio-environmental systems approach is related to society’s concept
and sense of place. According to cultural geographers, this social bond that
humans associate with their place can be manifested in a combination of the
following:
✓ Long period of residence in a place (e.g. being a resident of a city since birth)
✓ Spiritual relationship with the place (e.g. being a religious pilgrim in Mt.
Banahaw)
✓ Economic relationship with the place (e.g. being a municipal fisherfolk in a
coastal barangay)
✓ Political and ideological rootedness in the place (e.g. being a social activist
who joined protest actions in Mendiola and Plaza Miranda)
✓ Ecological connection with the place (e.g. being an environmental activist
committed to protect a watershed or a mangrove forest)

These highlight the basic premise of the socio-environment systems

approach that a human’s sense of place also has multidimensional character. Can
you give other examples of how people relate and associate themselves with a
particular place based on your personal experience?

Key Assumptions of Human Ecology

• Human societies and their natural environment are intimately linked or

interconnected.
• Human societies have a profound impact on their natural environments and
vice versa
• Human societies possess social consciousness and value systems that
influence the natural environment. The natural environment, likewise,
events an influence on these two aspects of society
• Human societies adopt different environmental philosophies that govern
environmental utilization, management, and development. Similarities in
environmental paradigms also serve as the foundation of various forms of
environment-related multisectoral broad-based cooperation. Differences in
environmental philosophy, on the other hand, may result in conflict and
struggle.

The application of human ecology covers a wide range of areas such as urban
planning human settlement, and infrastructural development, among others. For
instance, an urban planner who is guided by the core principles of human ecology
will first consider the potential adverse environmental, economic, and socio-cultural

Downloaded by Clyde Baculna (clydeguevara34@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|47803916

consequences of infrastructural development in a particular locality during the

feasibility study stage. This will ensure the preservation of ecological balance,
cultural integrity, and social harmony in the community.

What’s More

Venn Diagram: Create a Venn Diagram showing the Good and Bad on how
Human-Environment Systems affects human beings. Consider the following in
thinking of your answers: The proponents of HES approach; The idea of separating
the social and ecological spheres; Human ecology and the environment; and its
contribution to development.

What I Have Learned

This week we have learned that the Human-Environment Systems

perspective seeks to understand and explain the dynamic and complex interaction
of the natural environment with the demographic, economic, political, cultural,
behavioral, legal and development realities of society.
1. Explain the connectivity and applicability of Human-Environment System
in the analysis of environmental and social issues specially during this
pandemic period in the local, in the national, as well as in the global
level.
2. Briefly discuss the Human-Environment System in social sciences can be
applied in understanding and addressing the social issues and concerns.

What I Can Do

Activity 1: Dependency, Adaptation and Modification

Human-Environment Systems is an integrated scientific framework for
studying the interface and reciprocal interactions that link human (e.g., economic,
social) to natural (e.g., biological, hydrologic) sub-systems of the planet.

Instruction: Analyze the diagram below, and identify the Human-

Environment interactions (Dependency, Adaptation and Modification) and its
negative effects. Use a separate paper for your answers.

Environment

Humanity

Activity 2: Slogan to Mother Nature

Instruction: Based on your answer in activity 1, design creatively a slogan
that promote and safeguard the environment. Explain your slogan.
Now, you are now ready for our assessment. I believe you can answer them
correctly!

Additional Activities

Instruction: Identify one environmental issue or problem in your

community. Walk and look around your community while observing the
environmental problems or issues that you identified. First, identify the areas in
your community where the problem is visible. Locate them in your community
map. Next, locate the areas that are not very much affected by the problem. Then
compare these two areas and sets of data. Can you see any pattern or trend? Are
those marked areas near or proximate to each other?
With the data or information you have, analyze the nature and degree of the
problem. Analyze its causes and impact on you and your family as well as your
community. For the causes, identify political, economic, and sociocultural factors
or causes. For the impacts, identify consequences for or implications on health and
well-being, economic security, and peace and order in your community.
Examples of environmental issues or problems that you may wish to explore
include, but not limited to: 1) waste and disposal and/or collection, 2) drainage and
sewage, 3) pollution (air, water, noise), 4) migrant population, 5) industrial sites
and waste, 6) public transportation system, 7) mining activities, 8) quarrying, 9)
deforestation, and 10) fault line.
