MASTER DATA
Master data refers to the fundamental, unchanging information about various
entities within a business process. Master data includes essential details about
materials, suppliers, customers, and other relevant entities. This information
serves as a backbone for various transactions and processes, ensuring
consistency, accuracy, and effective data management.

4 Source List

Master data is a frontend input activity that also often happens only once or only
occasionally. Master data remains largely unchanged for a much longer period of
time and is used in routine business transactions. Transactions or business
processes, such as creating a purchase requisition, a purchase order, or goods
issuance or goods receipt are again input activities and take place as frequently
as needed. Finally, the reporting and analysis

1. Before Creating Material Master

The material master is the repository of the data used for a material. The material master
serves as a single source of information for each material; it’s where all information about a
material is entered and accessed from. The material master is used throughout the SAP
system and by different business users.

FIELD SELECTION (FROM THE MATERIAL DO THE INFO WILL BW DIFFERENT)

To define whether a field is hidden or displayed, or whether an entry is mandatory or
optional in material master maintenance, you must assign the field to a field selection
group. You may assign a field to one field selection group only.

While creating material and want to assign field to field selection group, First find the field

in reporting, such as spend analysis, distri-
bution of roles and responsibilities in purchasing and inventory departments, and so
on. For example, some companies have buyers based on the material group. One
buyer may be responsible for procuring only materials under material groups for
“Stationery” and “Repairs.” Another buyer may be responsible for procuring materi-
als under the material group “Steel” and so on.
Organizations, such as the United Nations Standard Products and Services Code
(UNSPSC), offer precodification of materials and services. UNSPSC provides an open,
global, multisector standard for efficient, accurate classification of products and ser-

3.7 Configuring a New Unit of Measure

Personal Copy for Prakash Swayam, prakash.gberp@gmail.com 91
SAP provides a large number of standard units of measure (UoMs) to meet almost all
business needs. Using change management to convince your client to use as many
standard UoMs as possible, instead of creating new ones, is imperative. However, if
needed for the business or for reporting, new UoMs can be created. For example, cus-
tomized UoMs can be “Enzyme,” “Box,” etc., which are unique or specific to a com-
pany only.
To create a new UoM, use Transaction CUNI or follow the menu path SAP IMG ! SAP
NetWeaver ! General Settings ! Check Units of Measurement.
Figure 3.17 shows the initial screen. The Dimensions button provides access to seven
base dimensions, to which all other dimensions can be traced. These dimensions
are length, weight, time, electrical current, temperature, molecular mass, and bright-
ness.
