Asia
Major Mountain Ranges:

The Himalayas
It stretches a length of 2400 Km across five countries of India, Nepal, Bhutan,
China and Pakistan. It has over 100 peaks with an elevation of over 7000 m.

It separates the plains of Indian Sub-continent from Tibetan Plateau.

Rivers arising from Himalayas:

The Ganges: The 2525 km river arises in western Himalayas in the Indian State of
Uttarakhand. It flows south and east.

The Indus: The 3,120 km (1,940 mi) river rises in mountain springs northeast of
Mount Kailash in Western Tibet, flows northwest through the disputed region of
Kashmir, bends sharply to the left after the Nanga Parbat massif, and flows south-
by-southwest through Pakistan, before emptying into the Arabian Sea near the
port city of Karachi.

Brahmaputra-Yarlung Tsangpo: The Brahmaputra is a trans-boundary river which


flows through Tibet (China), Northeastern India, and Bangladesh. It is known as
Brahmaputra or Luit in Assamese, Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibetan, the Siang/Dihang
River in Arunachali, and Jamuna River in Bengali. It is the 9th largest river in the
world by discharge, and the 15th longest (3969 km). This river system outflows
into Ganges. Brahmaputra alone is 2900 km long.
Altay Mountains
A mountain range in Central Asia and Eastern Asia. It is located near the southern
portion of the Russian region of Siberia. The Altay Mountains cover a vast area
that includes the nations of Russian, Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia. The
mountains stretch for 2,525 km (1,569 mi) from northwest to southeast.

Rivers:

Ob River: The seventh longest river in the world. It flows for 3,650 km in the
Western Siberian region of the Russian Federation. The Ob is a major river in
Russia. It is in western Siberia, and with its tributary the Irtysh forms the world's
seventh-longest river system, at 5,410 kilometers (3,360 mi).

The source of Ob River is at the confluence of Katun & Biya rivers in the Altai
Republic. It flows north westward and then northward and drains into Kara Sea of
Arctic Ocean via the Gulf of Ob (World’s largest estuary).

Irtysh River: The Irtysh River, the chief tributary of the Ob River, traces its
headwaters to the glaciers of the Altai mountains of the Xinjiang province of
China near Mongolia. It then flows northwest into Kazakhstan, and finally joins
the Ob near the Khanty-Mansiysk city in western Siberia, Russia, to drain into the
Arctic Ocean. The entire course of the river covers a distance of around 4,248 km.
