THE COOLING SYSTEM

The cooling system is a key part of how a vehicle works. Its main job is to keep the engine at the right
temperature by getting rid of extra heat created when the engine runs. Without the cooling system,
the engine would get too hot, which could cause serious damage and make the car run poorly or even
stop working. By moving coolant through the engine and radiator, the system helps keep the engine
cool and running smoothly. This overview will explain the important parts of the cooling system and
why it’s so important to prevent the engine from overheating.

1. Radiator
• Function: The radiator helps cool down the hot coolant coming from the engine by
transferring heat to the air that passes through it.

• What happens if it fails: If the radiator fails, the engine may overheat because the coolant
will not be cooled down properly. This could lead to engine damage or failure.

• Location: At the front of the vehicle, behind the grille.

2. Water Pump
• Function: The water pump circulates coolant throughout the engine and the cooling system
to maintain proper engine temperature.

• What happens if it fails: A failing water pump will cause poor coolant circulation, leading
to overheating. The engine could suffer serious damage if the coolant isn’t moving properly.

• Location: Attached to the engine block, usually driven by the engine’s drive belt.

3. Thermostat
• Function: The thermostat regulates the flow of coolant into the engine. It stays closed to let
the engine warm up and opens when the engine reaches its optimal temperature, allowing
coolant to flow through.

• What happens if it fails: A stuck thermostat can either prevent the engine from warming up
properly or cause it to overheat. If stuck closed, it stops coolant flow, leading to
overheating. If stuck open, it can prevent the engine from reaching the right temperature.

• Location: Near the engine, often at the point where the upper radiator hose connects to the
engine.

4. Coolant/Antifreeze
• Function: Coolant absorbs heat from the engine and transfers it to the radiator, where the
heat is dissipated. It also prevents freezing in cold temperatures.
• What happens if it fails: Without proper coolant or antifreeze, the engine can overheat or
freeze in cold weather, leading to serious engine damage.

• Location: Added through the radiator cap or the overflow tank (coolant reservoir).

5. Radiator Hoses
• Function: Radiator hoses carry coolant between the engine and the radiator.

• What happens if they fail: Cracked or damaged hoses can cause coolant leaks, leading to
low coolant levels and engine overheating.

• Location: Connecting the radiator to the engine, with an upper and lower hose.

6. Cooling Fan
• Function: The cooling fan helps pull air through the radiator to cool the coolant, especially
when the vehicle is not moving or is moving slowly.

• What happens if it fails: Without the fan, the engine may overheat when the vehicle is
stationary or moving at low speeds because air isn’t being forced through the radiator.

• Location: Mounted behind the radiator, between the engine and radiator.

7. Overflow Tank (Coolant Reservoir)

• Function: The overflow tank holds excess coolant that expands when it heats up,
preventing pressure buildup in the cooling system. It also returns coolant to the radiator
when it cools down.

• What happens if it fails: If the overflow tank fails or leaks, the system may lose coolant,
leading to overheating or low coolant levels in the radiator.

• Location: Usually located near the radiator, connected by a small hose.
