1) You have a pulley system with 2 ropes supporting the load.

500 N

Questions
A) What is the mechanical advantage of the pulley system?

B) If you want to lift the load by 1 meter, how much rope do you need to pull?

C) How much force do you need to apply to lift the load?

2) You are using a wheelbarrow to move a load. The wheelbarrow acts

as a second-class lever. In this case:

Distance from Fulcrum to Load (load arm): 0.8 meters

Distance from Fulcrum to Effort (effort arm): 1.2 meters

Load (weight of the object): 600 N

Calculate:

a) The mechanical advantage (MA) of the wheelbarrow.

b) The effort required to lift the load.

3) You have an inclined plane that is used to lift a heavy object. The
inclined plane has the following dimensions:

Height of the inclined plane (h): 4 meters

Length of the inclined plane ( l ): 10 meters

If you need to lift a load of 800 N up the inclined plane, calculate:

a)The mechanical advantage (MA) of the inclined plane.

b)The effort required to push the load up the inclined plane.

4) You have a gear system with two gears meshing together. The
details are as follows:

Driving Gear (Input Gear): 20 teeth

Driven Gear (Output Gear): 60 teeth

Calculate:

a) The gear ratio of the system.

b) Whether this gear ratio represents a high gear ratio or a low

gear ratio, and how it affects torque.

5) A cylindrical metal rod with the following properties is

under tension:
Diameter of the Rod (d): 0.1 meters

Original Length of the Rod (L0): 2 meters

Applied Force (F): 10,000 N

Young’s Modulus of the Rod (k): 150 GPa (150 × 10^9 Pa)

Using these details:

a)Calculate the Cross-Sectional Area of the Rod.

b)Calculate the Stress on the Rod.

c)Calculate the Strain experienced by the Rod.

d)Calculate the Elongation of the .

6) A machine does 5000 J of work in 10 seconds, and using the power

calculated, determine the amount of work the machine can do in 20
seconds if the power output remains constant.

7) A motor operates with two different power ratings depending on its

mode of operation. In the first mode, the motor operates at a power of
1500 W and performs a task in 20 minutes. In the second mode, the
motor operates at 1200 W and performs a similar task in 25 minutes.
Find the total work perform by the two motor.
8) A machine applies a constant force of 500 N to push an object along a
straight path. The object is moved a total distance of 150 feet in 0.5
hours.

9) A worker uses a pulley system to lift a 400 N load. The worker pulls a
rope and exerts an effort force of 100 N to lift the load. The length of the
rope pulled by the worker is 6 meters, and the load is raised by 1.5
meters.

a) Calculate the IMA of the pulley system using the ratio of the distance
moved by the effort to the distance moved by the load.

b) Calculate the AMA of the pulley system using the ratio of the load
force to the effort force applied by the worker.

c) Calculate the efficiency of the pulley system by comparing the AMA

and IMA.
