2. COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course consists of 3 credits, taught alternately with theory and practice exercises
in the following main contents:
In theory, this module provides learners with basic knowledge of English grammar and
syntax so that learners have an overall and systematic knowledge of English grammar,
from the smallest concepts such as parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs,
prepositions…) and their grammatical categories to phrases, clauses and sentences.
On the basis of that theory, learners will practice doing various types of applied
exercises, distinguishing, identifying and analyzing grammatical phenomena as well as
their similarities and differences.
In practice, learners will apply English grammar theory to better use English,
especially when writing and translating.

3. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES


3.1. Learning outcomes about knowledge, skills, autonomy and responsibility
This module equips learners with basic knowledge of English syntax so that they can
systematically understand and master English grammar, thereby build skills to apply
knowledge of syntax to using English, especially for writing and translation skills.
On completion of this course, the students should be able to:
3.1.1. Knowledge
- CLO1: Master terminology, and basic concepts of syntax; about parts of speech,
phrases, clauses and sentences in English (types of nouns, types of verbs and their
characteristics, grammatical categories of nouns and verbs; distinguish simple,
compound and complex sentences; identify and distinguish types of clauses:
independent, dependent, restrictive, non-restrictive…, and apply this theoretical
knowledge to practice.
3.1.2. Skills
- CLO2: Understand grammar components in sentences for better reading
comprehension, able to read complex sentences and long texts.

- CLO3: Practice writing short paragraphs and essays to illustrate the grammar
phenomena learned
3.1.3. Autonomy and responsibility
- CLO4: be aware of the role and importance of English syntax, as well as the
relationship of syntax with other modules, skills and applications.
- CLO5: Love English more and want to learn more about English grammar.
