Activity 8 (In NCERT Book Activity No 4)

Objective: To demonstrate a function which is one-one but not onto.


Material Required: White paper, glue, coloured pens and papers, items of geometry box etc.
Method of construction:

We take white sheet paper and paste two coloured papers on it in the form of
rectangular strips representing Set X and Y. We take two elements a and b in set X and
three elements 1, 2 and 3 in set Y. We again take another two coloured papers in the form
of rectangular strips representing Set X and Y and join elements of set X with the elements
of set Y using coloured pens as shown in the figures 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3.

Demonstration:

1. We take set X = {a, b}


2. We take set Y = {1,2,3}
3. We join corresponding elements of X to the elements of Y as shown in the figure.

Observation:

1. The image of the element a of X in Y is 2.


The image of the element b of X in Y is 3.
So the figure 4.3 represents a function because every element of Set X has its unique
image in Set Y.
2. Both the elements a and b in Set X have distinct images 2 and 3 respectively in
Set Y. So, the function is one-one.
3. The pre-image of element 1 of Set Y does not exist in Set X . So, the function is not
onto.

Result:

Function depicted in the figure 4.3 is one-one but not onto.

Application: This activity can be used to demonstrate the concept of one-one and onto
function.
