Overview

When asked to design the quintessential Mongoose 'Mech, the Scientists in cooperation with the
Clan’s excellent and skilled Technician Caste, looked for inspiration at the huge database that the
Great Father had brought with Him from the Inner Sphere, one which was often left gathering dust
by most Clans.

With all the designs of the Star League Defence Forces to look at, the Mongoose team assigned to
the task identified a suitable candidate Mech to serve as the basis for the Iron Mongoose: a 'Mech
that had not passed the tests to replace the Shadow Hawk, the Dragon, which within the Inner
Sphere would become the quintessential symbol of the samurai of the DCMS.

Capabilities

Designed with flexibility, mobility and survivability in mind (all things favoured by Clan Mongoose),
as well as ease of maintenance and field longevity in mind, the 60 ton Iron Mongoose was designed
to be as fast as possible, without using an XL engine. This was possible thanks to the use of a 300
rated engine coupled with a MASC system, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 108kph in short
bursts.

The Iron Mongoose is protected by 10 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armour, which is near to the maximum
that its chassis can bear, giving it the capacity to resist a hit by a 185mm gun on every front location.
This was a major point that the Technician Caste drove home to the Scientists on the team, as the
Technicians knew that more armour lead to faster battlefield repair and turnaround times, as vital
internal systems were less likely to suffer damage. To give it enough weight for its weapons, Endo
Steel replaces the original Chassis, which frees one third of its total mass for weapons.

As a side effect of this heavy protection, the Iron Mongoose looks like scales have grown on it; a
disturbing look that made the Mech look far more like an oriental Dragon than either the original
Dragon or the Wyvern upon which that Mech was based. Because of this strange look, green
MechWarrior’s facing an Iron Mongoose for the first time are quite often unwilling to get too close
to it.

The Mongoose standard configuration was deemed flexible enough to allow the Iron Mongoose to
harass its opponents at long range before closing in for the kill. The first part of the job is done by an
ER PPC in the Right Arm and a LRM-15 in the Centre Torso with 3 tons of ammo. 3 Medium Pulse
Lasers, 2 in the Left Arm and 1 in the Left Torso, increase the firepower when the Iron Mongoose
gets closer to its target and an ER Small Laser faces the rear in order to deal with threats from
behind.

There are only 3 other configurations that appear in any number, each designed to suit the peculiar
tastes of individual Warriors. The first alternate configuration is the Patient Stalker, often used by
Clans who have captured this design, as it has never been traded. With its 4 Medium Pulse Lasers
linked to a Targeting Computer, an Anti-Missile System, an ECM Suite, an Active Probe and a
Searchlight, as well as the extra mobility provided by its 5 Jump Jets; this configuration is ideally
suited to restricted grounds, or long fights, where it slowly wears down its opponents.
The second unique configuration is called the Crusader, an almost exact replica of the classical
Crusader. With 2 Artemis-IV LRM-15s, two Streak SRM-6s and 2 ER Medium Lasers, the Crusader can
deal with most targets, although it is often used in the anti-air role.

The last of these variations is the Gunslinger, which is specially designed to fight duels and end them
quickly. With an ultra 20 autocannon in the right torso and a Streak SRM-6 in the left, few opponents
can hold their ground against the raw firepower of this design. The Gunslinger’s only weakness lies
in the low number of rounds for its main weapons and short range, however, given its specialisation
and the tactics it relies on, this is not seen as a major drawback.

Battle History

Since their first deployment in 2993, Iron Mongooses have been at the forefront of all the fights of
Clan Mongoose especially those against the Star Adders, Smoke Jaguars, Snow Ravens and Cloud
Cobras. However, the most surprising fight involving this 'Mech was between a single 'Mech (in the
Gunslinger Configuration) and a Binary of Clan Star Adder VTOL

Using its ground speed and the tight and hilly terrain of the Arlan Hills of Circe (and with a few lucky
shots), the single Gunsliger was able to deal with the intruders before they managed to locate the
main units of Clan Mongoose defensive forces. This allowed Clan Mongoose to counter attack and
drive the invaders off-world.

Deployment

Only Clan Mongoose uses the Iron Mongoose and it has become the main 'Mech of its Heavy units
and the core of the support for the lighter weight Mongoose formations.

Notable Warriors

Warrior Jaime Snuka is a Ristar within Clan Ghost Bear, he captured an Iron Mongoose before
refitting it to better suit his combat styles. Since this event, he has won 4 Trials against Warriors of
Clan Mongoose.

Warrior Giovanna is a Mongoose Warrior famous within her Clan because her Iron Mongoose is the
last survivor of the first production run. However, the age of her 'Mech is starting to show and it
needs more maintenance and repair than any other Iron Mongoose in the Clan Touman.
