CHAPTER 2

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methodology that was used in the conduct of this study.

It covers the research design, location of the study, sample selection and sampling

methods, data gathering procedure, tools used for data gathering, techniques for

analyzing the data, and ethical considerations followed throughout the research.

Research Design

The researchers will use quantitative research design which is the process of

collecting and analyzing numerical data. It can be used to find patterns and averages,

make predictions, test causal relationships, and generalize results to a wider population,

(Bhandari, 2022). It is useful and compatible with the study to know the effectiveness of

quizizz to the learning engagement and motivation of grade 5 learners from Zaragoza

Central School.

The researchers will use the descriptive-comparative method to be able to

describe the difference among variables, (Quaranta, 2017). Descriptive-comparative

method will be used to describe the difference between quizizz and the students’ learning

engagement and motivation.

Research Locale

This study will conduct at Zaragoza Central School. The researchers will choose

Zaragoza Central School because the school integrates quizizz as a method in assessing

their lesson.
Figure 2. Vicinity Map of Zaragoza Central School

Sample and Sampling Procedure

The population of the study includes all grade-5 learners because grade-5 learners

are the same level who uses quizizz. From the population the researchers will select the

sample based on specific criteria which is grade-5 learners from Zaragoza Central School

who uses quizizz and do not use quizizz.

The researchers will use Purposive sampling refers to a group of non-probability

sampling techniques in which units are selected because they have characteristics that

you need in your sample. In other words, units are selected “on purpose” in purposive

sampling.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will collect data through the use of surveys. As defined by

Quality Resources (2020), a survey involves examining a process or questioning a

specific group of individuals to gather information about a service, product, or process.

These surveys will collect data from a target group regarding their opinions, behaviors, or

knowledge.

In preparation, the researchers will first obtain approval from the College

Department Dean. A consent letter will be attached to the survey questionnaire for the

respondents, and the researchers will explain the consent form, emphasizing that all

collected data will be treated confidentially and used solely for the study.

The survey will be administered face-to-face. Afterward, the researchers will

collect the data and prepare it for analysis using MS Excel.

Data Gathering Instrument

The instrument will be used by the researchers is a questionnaire. Questionnaire is

a method of data collection used to collect, analyze and interpret different perspectives of

people from a particular population (Sincero, 2012). The questionnaire will be adapted

and modified from the study by Margallo, et.al (2023) and Ling, et.al (2022).

The instrument has already been validated and demonstrated high consistency

alpha of Cronbach’s 0.84. Meanwhile, the traditional method of teaching survey

questionnaire was modified and pilot tested with a random sample 30 students that also

have a Filipino class. The analysis of this instrument showed high consistency which is

the alpha of Cronbach’s 0.86. The value of 0.84-0.90 in Cronbach’s Alpha is reliable.

It aims to gather information about the effectiveness of quizizz to learning

motivation and engagement of grade 5 learners from Zaragoza Central School.

The questionnaire includes the 4 parts, I. socio-demographic profile of the

respondents; the sex and internet connectivity, II. Learning Motivation, III. Learning

Engagement.

Data Analysis Technique

The study will use the following statistical tools and techniques to identify the

effectiveness of quizizz on learner’s engagement and motivation. It is categorized by the

demographic profile of the respondents, description of students’ engagement and

motivation, and the relationship of quizizz and student’s engagement and motivation.

The researchers will use descriptive-comparative design to analyze the data. To

first calculate the average in which weights assign individual values to determine the

relative importance of each observation, the weighted mean formula and rating scale will

be used.

Weighted mean formula is as follow;

Where:

𝒇𝒊= frequency

𝒙𝒊= degree of response

n=total no. of respondents

The weighted arithmetic mean was used in determining the profile of the

respondents and their response to the items given. In particular, the mean is denoted by x

of the scores x1 x2 x3 x4 is given by the formula.

Table 1. Rating Scale

The modified questionnaire was divided into two sections: respondent profile and

student learning motivation and engagement using traditional method and Quizizz. A

four-point rating scale will be used to create the student surveys. The response options

were: 1= strongly disagree, 2= disagree, 3= agree, and 4= strongly agree.

Degree Range Verbal Verbal Interpretation

of Description
Response
4 3.25- 4.00 Strongly Agree The method is highly effective in

improving the learner’s engagement

and motivation of grade 5 learners

from Zaragoza Central School.

3 2.50-3.24 Agree The method is effective in improving

the learner’s engagement and

motivation of grade 5 learners from

Zaragoza Central School.

2 1.75-2.49 Disagree The method is moderate in improving

the learner’s engagement and

motivation of grade 5 learners from

Zaragoza Central School.

1 1.00-1.74 Strongly The method is highly ineffective in

disagree improving the learner’s engagement

and motivation of grade 5 learners

from Zaragoza Central School.

A paired samples t-test will also be utilized by the researchers. A T-test is a

statistical test used to test whether the difference between the response of two groups is

statistically significant or not. The researchers will use it to get the significant difference

between the learning engagement and motivation of the students using traditional method

and using Quizizz.

Formula is as follow;

T = Student’s t-test

M = mean

\mu = theoretical value

S = standard deviation

{n} = variable set size

Ethical Considerations

During the research process, the researchers followed the principles of

consideration established by Bryman and Bell (2007). The voluntary involvement of the

respondents was regarded as essential, and they were allowed to leave the study at any

time if they chose. Moreover, no participant was harmed in the course of the study,

ensuring that privacy and confidentiality were preserved.

Informed consent was obtained from all participants before data collection. Each

participant was thoroughly briefed on the purpose of the study, the procedures involved,

and their rights, including the right to withdraw from the study at any time without any
consequences. Participants were also informed about the scope of the study, including the

risks, benefits, and how their data would be used.

The data collection was carried out with the highest level of confidentiality, in

accordance with Republic Act No. 10173, also referred to as the Data Privacy Act of

2021, with the gathered information being strictly used for research purposes only.
