Assignment 4

1) Answer the following questions regarding GPS

a) How long does it take for a GPS satellite to complete one orbit?
b) Sketch an orbit about earth and identify the perigee, the true anomaly, and the
eccentric anomaly
c) What is the mean anomaly of an orbit?
d) What is the inclination angle of an orbit? Use a sketch
e) What is the argument of perigee of an orbit? Use a sketch

2) A GPS receiver aboard an aircraft uses an atomic clock as its reference and hence has zero
clock bias. As a result, only three satellites are needed for a position fix. The current unit vectors
to the three visible GPS satellites are:
𝑟1 = 0.866 𝑖 + 0.5 𝑗 + 0.0 𝑘
𝑟2 = 0.866 𝑖 − 0.5 𝑗 + 0.0 𝑘
𝑟3 = 0.866 𝑖 + 0.0 𝑗 + 0.5 𝑘
Further, the difference between the actual, current pseudorange, and the nominal values are:
Δ𝑅1 = 100 𝑚
Δ𝑅2 = 10 𝑚
Δ𝑅3 = 0.0 𝑚
a) Determine the direction cosines of the lines joining the user to the three satellites.
b) Write the matrix expression to determine the corrections to the nominal values:
Δ𝑥, Δ𝑦, Δ𝑧
c) Solve for Δ𝑥, Δ𝑦, Δ𝑧
d) What is the value for the Geometric Dilution of Precision?

3) The current locations in the basic coordinate system of four satellites within the field of view
of a GPS receiver are given as:
X (km) Y (km) Z (km)
Satellite 1 23032 13325 0
Satellite 2 23032 -13298 0
Satellite 3 23032 0 13298
Satellite 4 23032 0 -13298

The current best estimate of the GPS receiver’s location and clock bias are:
𝑥𝑛 = 6160.9 𝑘𝑚
𝑦𝑛 = 1650.8 𝑘𝑚
𝑧𝑛 = 0 𝑘𝑚
𝑡𝑛 = 1 𝜇𝑠
The difference between the current measured and the nominal pseudorange are:
Δ𝑅1 = 100 𝑚
Δ𝑅2 = 10 𝑚
Δ𝑅3 = 1 𝑚
Δ𝑅4 = 0 𝑚
a) Determine the nominal pseudorange to the four satellites
b) Determine the direction cosine matrix
c) Setup but do not solve the matrix equation for the corrections due to the nominal
values
d) Write the equation for GDOP in terms of the direction cosine matrix A
e) Given that:
0.0079 0.1003 0.0000 0.3071
0.1003 1.2692 0.0000 0.1464
[𝐴𝑇 𝐴]−1 =[ ]
0.0000 0.0000 1.3141 0.0000
−0.3173 0.0189 0.0000 −0.2481
Find the GDOP
