CM=½ AB

HINTS AND NSWERS

**1. The sum of three numbers in AP is 21 and their product

is231. Find the numbers.**
Let the three numbers be \(a - d\), \(a\), and \(a + d\) (since
theyare in arithmetic progression). We are given two pieces
ofinformation:

\[a - d + a + a + d = 21\]
\[a - d \times a \times (a + d) = 231\]

Solve these equations to find the values of \(a\), \(a - d\), and
\(a+ d\).

**2. A tree breaks due to a storm and the broken part bends
sothat the top of the tree touches the ground making an angle
of30 degrees with it. The distance between the foot of the tree
tothe point where the top touches the ground is 8m. Find
theheight of the tree (broken and unbroken part).**

Use trigonometry to solve for the height of the tree.

Theunbroken part will be the height you calculate.

**3. A school has a total of 630 students. The ratio of boys

tothe ratio of girls is 3:2. The ratio changes to 7:5 when 90
newstudents are added. Find the number of new boys added.**

Set up equations based on the given ratios and solve for

thenumber of boys and girls initially. Then, add 90 to the
totalnumber of students and adjust the ratios accordingly to
findthe new number of boys and girls. The increase in the
numberof boys will be the answer.
**4. Probability of 2 white out of 5 white, 3 green, and 2 redballs
without replacement.**

Use the concept of combinations to calculate the probability.

**5. A man speaks the truth 3 out of 4 times. What is

theprobability of him getting a six?**

Use probability theory to calculate the probability of himgetting

a six considering his truth-telling pattern.

**6. Find the perimeter of a right angle triangle using

Pythagoras' theorem. Then, if the sum of 3 terms is 33 and
theproduct of the first and third is 29 more than the middle
term,find the terms.**

Set up equations based on the given information and solve

forthe terms of the triangle.

**7. A man is known to speak the truth 3 out of 4 times.

Hethrows a die and reports that it is a six. The probability that
it isactually a six is...**

Use Bayes' theorem to calculate the probability.

**8. Solve the given rational expression equation.**

Set up the equation and solve for \(x\).

**9. If a man speaks the truth 3 out of 4 times, and he rolls

adice and says it's a six, what is the probability that it is true?**

Use probability theory and Bayes' theorem to calculate

theprobability.
**10. Two poles of equal height... Find the height of the
polesand the distances of the point from the poles.**

Use trigonometry to solve for the height of the poles and

thedistances.

**11. A tree breaks due to a storm... Find the height of the

tree(broken and unbroken part).**

Use trigonometry to solve for the height of the tree.

**12. Two ships are sailing in the sea... What is the

distancebetween the two ships?**

Use trigonometry to solve for the distance between the

twoships.

**13. A person can pack 15 packets in 2 minutes... How

muchtime will they take together to pack 300 packets?**

Calculate the rate at which they pack together and use it to

findthe time needed to pack 300 packets.

**14. The average age of the boys in a class is 16 and

theaverage age of the girls is 15. What will be the average age
ofthe class?**

Calculate the overall average using the given information

andthe number of boys and girls.

**15. The shadow of a tower... Find the height of the tower.**

Use trigonometry to solve for the height of the tower.

**16. You are traveling from point A to C... What will be
theaverage speed you will be traveling at from A to C?**

Use the formula for average speed to calculate the

averagespeed for the entire journey.

**17. In right triangle ABC, right-angled at C, M is the mid-

pointof hypotenuse AB... Show that CM=½ AB.**

Use the midpoint theorem and the properties of triangles

toprove this statement.

**Problem 18: Average Speed**

To find the average speed for the entire journey from A to

C,you can use the formula:

\[ \text{Average Speed} = \frac{\text{Total

Distance}}{\text{TotalTime}} \]

1. **Calculate the total distance:**

\[ \text{Total Distance} = AC = 200 \, \text{km} \]

2. **Calculate the time taken for each leg of the journey:**

- **Time taken from A to B:**

\[ \text{Distance from A to B} = AB = \frac{200}{2} = 100 \,
\text{km} \]
\[ \text{Time taken from A to B} =
\frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Speed}} = \frac{100}{30} =
\frac{10}{3} \, \text{hours} \]

- **Time taken from B to C:**

\[ \text{Distance from B to C} = BC = \frac{200}{2} = 100 \,
\text{km} \]
\[ \text{Time taken from B to C} =
\frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Speed}} = \frac{100}{60} =
\frac{5}{3}\, \text{hours} \]

3. **Calculate the total time:**

\[ \text{Total Time} = \text{Time from A to B} + \text{Time from
B to C} = \frac{10}{3} + \frac{5}{3} = \frac{15}{3} = 5
\,\text{hours} \]

---

**Problem 19: Proof**

To prove that \(CM = \frac{1}{2} AB\), you can use the

midpointtheorem, which states that the line segment joining
themidpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third
sideand half of its length.
