CVE 221 Fluid Mechanics (EXAMPLE SHEET 3)

1. Explain briefly the following heads: (i) Potential head (ii) Velocity head (iii) Datum head.
2. State Bernoulli’s theorem for steady and incompressible fluid. Derive an expression for
Bernoulli’s equation from first principle and state the assumptions made for such a derivation.
3. Derive Euler equation of motion, and obtain Bernoulli’s equation from it.
4. A pipe (1) 400 mm in diameter, conveying water, branches into two (2 and 3) of diameters 300
mm and 200 mm respectively. (i) Find the discharge in pipe (1) if the average velocity of water in
this pipe is 3 m/s; (ii) determine the velocity of water in 200 mm pipe if the average velocity in
300 mm diameter pipe is 2 m/s.
5. The water is flowing through a pipe having diameters 20 cm and 10 cm at section 1 and 2
respectively. The rate of flow through pipe is 35 litre/s. The section 1 is 6 m above the datum
and section 2 is 4 m above datum. If the pressure at section 1 is 39.24 N/cm 2 , find the intensity
of pressure at section 2.
6. A pipe 200 m long slopes down at 1 in 100 and tapers from 800 mm diameter at the higher end
to 400 mm diameter at the lower end, and carries 100 litre/s of oil (sp. gr. = 0.85). If the
pressure gauge at the higher end reads 50 kN/m2, determine: (i) velocities at the two ends, and
(ii) pressure at the higher end. Neglect all losses.
7. The diameters of a tapering pipe at the section 1-1 and 2-2 are 100 mm and 150 mm
respectively. If the velocity of water flowing through the pipe a section 1-1 is 5 m/s, find: (i)
discharge through the pipe, and (ii) velocity of water at section 2-2.
8. A pipe 5 m long is inclined at an angle of 150 with the horizontal. The diameters of pipe at
smaller section (at lower level) and larger section are 80 mm and 240 mm respectively. If the
pipe is uniformly tapering and the velocity of water at the smaller section is 1 m/s find the
difference of pressures between the two sections.
9. A pipe line carrying oil (sp. gr. 0.8) changes in diameter from 300 mm at position 1 to 600 mm
diameter at position 2 which is 5 metres at a higher level. If the pressure at position 1 and 2 are
100 KN/m2 and 60 KN/m3 respectively and the discharge is 300 litres/s, determine (i) loss of
head, and (ii) direction of flow.
