CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the study

Understanding electrical hazards and implementing safety measures is paramount

to protecting lives and property. Therefore, this research investigates electrical
hazards in shs building and safety measures taken The primary objective is to
identify gaps in knowledge regarding electrical hazards among domestic electricity
and offer recommendations to enhance safety and mitigate the risks.

Researchers conducted several studies on electrical safety awareness and practices

for improving occupational safety and health of EIM -12 Students. However, most of
these studies were limited to EIM students and other electrical professional, with
few focusing on academic workshops/laboratories, and almost none in the case of
Arcelo Memorial National High School, San Vicente ,Liloan. This study therefore,
aims to assess the extent of electrical safety practices among staff and students of
electrical engineering department, Arcelo Memorial National High school, San
Vicente, Liloan. The authors used quantitative research design in which 30-item
structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 3 EIM strand in Grade 12
students of SHS building at Arcelo Memorial National High school (AMNHS). The
results show that EIM -12 students do not strictly observe electrical safety practices
in the workshops/laboratories. The results also revealed the common causes of
electrical accidents in the workshops/laboratories; nature of frequent electrical
accidents; and measures to reduce electrical accidents and promote students’
compliance to electrical safety rules and regulations. The researchers limit this
study to only EIM -12 students in AMNHS SHS Building . Also, only quantitative data
was collected from the respondents, without giving consideration to the in-depth
information qualitative data (such as interview) would have provide. As such,
conclusions derived using quantitative approach from the respondents relies on the
genuineness of the information provided by them. The findings provide the faculty
of EIM with a basis to introduce ‘The impact of Safety Electrical Wiring Practices’
course into the curriculum
The purpose of this study was to survey eim students in arcelo memorial nhs about
the impact of safety practices in electrical wiring accidents. This study was
specifically concerned with five safety condition areas. Safety condition areas were:
administration support; intervening conditions; teacher preparation; classroom
instruction; and general safety and equipment conditions

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Despite the implementation of safety protocols in educational settings, there is a persistent

occurrence of electrical wiring accidents among Grade 12 Electrical Installation and
Maintenance (EIM) students. This study aims to investigate how different safety practices
influence the frequency and severity of these accidents. Specifically, it seeks to determine
which safety measures are most effective in reducing incidents, identifying gaps in current
practices, and proposing enhancements to improve overall safety outcomes for students
engaged in electrical wiring activities. The goal is to provide evidence-based
recommendations to enhance safety protocols and reduce the risk of accidents in
educational environments.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

Conceptual Framework

Independent Variable: Safety Practices

Adherence to safety protocols

Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

Awareness and understanding of electrical safety hazards

Compliance with electrical wiring standards

Dependent Variable: Electrical Wiring Accidents

Frequency of accidents

Severity of accidents

Types of accidents (e.g., electrocution, fires, short circuits)

Mediating Variables:

Knowledge and skills of students

Attitude towards safety

Organizational culture and safety climate

Physical environment of the building

Moderating Variables:
*Age and gender of students

*Experience with electrical work

*Level of supervision

Hypothesis 1. Students who adhere to safety protocols will have a lower frequency of
electrical wiring accidents..

Hypothesis 2. The physical environment of the building, such as the condition of electrical
wiring and the availability of safety equipment, will moderate the relationship between
safety practices and electrical wiring accidents.

This theoretical framework provides a solid foundation for analyzing the impact of safety
practices on electrical wiring accidents in Gr.12 EIM students at AMNHS SHS building. By
examining the factors that contribute to accidents and developing targeted interventions, it
is possible to create a safer learning environment for students.

DIFENITION OF TERMS

Electrical Wiring Accidents: These are incidents involving electrical wiring that result in
injury, property damage, or disruption of electrical service. Examples include electrical
shocks, short circuits, and fires caused by faulty wiring.

Safety Practices. These are measures implemented to prevent accidents and injuries, such
as following electrical safety codes, using proper tools and equipment, and receiving training
on electrical safety procedures.

Gr. 12 EIM Students: These are high school students enrolled in the Electronics,
Instrumentation, and Maintenance (EIM) program, which focuses on electrical and electronic
technology.

AMNHS SHS Building. This is the building where the AMNHS Senior High School is located,
which is the institution where the Gr. 12 EIM students are studying.

Impact. This refers to the effect or influence that safety practices have on electrical wiring
accidents, such as reducing the frequency of accidents, minimizing injuries, and preventing
property damage.

Analyzing. This involves examining and evaluating the relationship between safety
practices and electrical wiring accidents to understand their impact and identify areas for
improvement.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

Scope and Delimitation of Analyzing the impact of safety practices on electrical wiring
accidents in Gr.12 EIM students at AMNHS SHS building

Scope

This study will investigate the impact of safety practices on electrical wiring accidents of
EIM-12 at Arcelo Memorial National High school (AMNHS) SHS building within San Vicente
LILOAN , Central Visayas, Philippines. The specific areas of focus include:

Demographic characteristics. Age, gender, education level, and work experience of

workshop participants.

Workshop environment: Physical layout, lighting, ventilation, and noise levels.

Electrical Wiring practices accidents availability and accessibility. Types of safety

practices and electrial wiring accidents.

Electrical Wiring practices accidents. Frequency of training, content, and effectiveness.

Supervisory practices. safety practices of electrical wiring , disciplinary actions, and

positive reinforcement.

Participant attitudes and beliefs. Perceptions of electrical wiring practices importance,

comfort, and

inconvenience.

Organizational culture. Safety policies, procedures, and commitment to employee well-

being.

Delimitations. To ensure a focused and manageable research scope, the following

limitations will be imposed

Geographic location. The study will be confined to EIM workshops within San Vicente
LILOAN.

Workshop type. Workshops that involves of the safety practices on electrical wiring , such
as using PPE, Proper training, and disciplinary will be included.

Timeframe. The study will be conducted during a specific period to capture current
practices and attitudes.

Data collection methods. The research will primarily rely on surveys and interviews with
workshop participants and supervisors.

Factors considered. While a wide range of factors will be examined, other potential
influences beyond the scope of this study may also exist.
