CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

A. Rationale

Workplace preparedness cannot be regarded complete without a strong aspect on safety in

electrical installation. Electrical Installation and Maintenance is just one of those technical

courses within the field of vocational education where the challenges and demands for hands-on

experience expose the students to some dangers in electric shock, fires, or even malfunction of

equipment. In turn, it poses threats to both personal and environmental safety besides exposing

institutional resources.

Research has emphasized the need for safety awareness in the prevention of workplace

incidents. According to Anderson and White (2021), poor safety training increases the chances of

accidents, while Lopez and Hernandez (2020) discovered that strong institutional safety

programs result in graduates with higher levels of safety awareness. However, in most

developing regions, such as the Philippines, outdated equipment and limited training resources

limit students' ability to practice and internalize safety standards effectively.

This study aims to evaluate the knowledge of safety standards and risk management

among EIM students, in terms of safety protocols knowledge and the ability to handle risks. This

research aims to identify the gaps in understanding and application of knowledge, thus helping to

improve the safety education programs for better preparation of students to meet the challenges

in real life within high-risk technical fields.

This study is anchored from the Reason’s Accident Causation Model (1990), also known as the
Swiss Cheese Model Theory.

C. Statement of the Problem

The field of electrical installation errantly risky and demands strict adherence to safety

standards and effective risk management practices. However, there is growing concern about the

level of awareness of these critical principles among students pursuing studies in this domain. A

lack of awareness can lead to unsafe practices, increased incidence of accidents, and potentially

life-threatening situations in academic settings and future workplaces.

This problem is particularly relevant as these students represent the next generation of

electrical professionals who will be responsible for ensuring safety in various industries. Despite

the presence of safety training and risk management protocols in technical education, gaps may

exist in students' understanding and application of these standards. Factors such as inadequate

training, limited practical exposure, or ineffective curriculum design could contribute to this

issue.

The consequences of insufficient awareness include a heightened risk of workplace

accidents, non-compliance with safety regulations, and potential damage to institutional

reputation. Addressing this problem is crucial to enhancing the safety culture, improving student

preparedness, and aligning educational outcomes with industry standards.

Thus, this study seeks to evaluate the awareness of safety standards and risk management

among electrical installation and maintenance students. It aims to identify gaps in knowledge,

explore contributing factors, and propose recommendations for enhancing safety education in

technical and vocational institutions.

5

D. Significance of the Study

The study is to assess EIM students' awareness of safety standards and risk management,

identifying specific areas where improvements are needed for EIM students in Abellana National

School. Through this assessment, educational institutions can better understand how to enhance

their safety training programs, ultimately benefiting students as they prepare for careers in high-

risk technical fields. The result of this study is helpful to the students, teachers, school

administrators, researchers, and other individuals that have related concerns in this study.

The study will also help students who are also under the EIM Major who are

participating or performing the work of electricians will give them safety awareness, risk

management and other possible outcomes of this study.

The study will also help the teachers who’s being assigned for the lectures and guide the

students evaluating the awareness of this important rule when performing the task.

The study will also help school administrators. It will provide them with details on how

to avoid the risky outcome and hazardous events of the EIM training grounds. It is one way that

administrators can use it to enhance school orientation to improve the knowledge of their

teachers regarding this event.

Finally, the researcher hopes that the findings of this study will also be beneficial to

future researchers and anybody else who wants to learn more about assessing student’s

awareness of safety regulations and risk management as well as any potential implications for

their academic growth.

Statement of the Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis (H₀):

There is no significant relationship between the level of awareness of safety standards

and risk management and the preparedness of Electrical Installation and Maintenance (EIM)

students to handle workplace challenges.

Alternative Hypothesis (H₁):

There is a significant relationship between the level of awareness of safety standards and

risk management and the preparedness of Electrical Installation and Maintenance (EIM) students

to handle workplace challenges.

E. Scope and Limitation

This study was focused on Evaluating the Awareness of Safety Standards and Risk

Management Among Electrical Installation and Maintenance among Grade 12 Titan Technical

Vocational Livelihood Automotive students.

Scope

• Target Respondent: The research Respondents in this study Is the Grade 12- Titan

Technical Vocational and Livelihood Automotive student's

• Location: This study will be conducted at Abellana National School Senior High

School Building.
7

• Methodology: A Quantitative and Qualitative research approach will be conducted.

Random Sampling method will be employed to 20 respondents with a 15 (fifteen) item

research questionnaire will be administered to gather comprehensive data through

qualitative open-ended questions and a quantitative survey questionnaire.

Limitations

• The Study sample size may be limited making it more difficult to generalize results to

all students studying electrical installation and maintenance.

• Participants' depth of knowledge may be impacted by limited access to educational

materials and real-world training settings.

•Time constraints could limit the thoroughness of data collection and analysis.

•The students may be exposed to safety regulations and risk management techniques

inconsistently because of curriculum variations amongst institutions.

F. Definition of Terms

The following terms are conceptually defined for the researchers and readers to have a

better understanding of the relevance of these terms in the present study.

Safety Standards - Refers to a set of established guidelines, protocols, and regulations

designed to ensure the protection of individuals, equipment, and the environment during

electrical installation and maintenance activities. These standards focus on preventing accidents,

injuries, and damage through preventive measures and proper safety procedures.
8

Risk Management - The process of identifying, assessing, and mitigating potential

hazards and risks associated with electrical installation and maintenance work. This includes

evaluating the likelihood and severity of risks, implementing control measures, and establishing

contingency plans to minimize adverse outcomes.

Awareness - The level of knowledge, understanding, and recognition individuals have

regarding safety standards and risk management practices within the context of electrical work.

Awareness encompasses the ability to recall relevant information, understand its importance, and

apply it in practical situations.

Electrical Installation - The process of assembling and setting up electrical systems and

components, such as wiring, outlets, and electrical panels, to ensure proper functionality and

safety. Installation practices must adhere to regulatory standards to ensure both operational

efficiency and safety.

Electrical Maintenance - The ongoing tasks and procedures required to keep electrical

systems and equipment in optimal working condition. This includes regular inspections, repairs,

and troubleshooting to prevent failures and hazards, ensuring the longevity and reliability of

electrical infrastructure.

Students - Individuals enrolled in a formal educational program focused on electrical

installation and maintenance. These students are typically in the process of acquiring the skills,

knowledge, and competencies required for the safe and effective execution of electrical work.

Evaluation - The systematic process of assessing and determining the level of awareness

and understanding among students regarding safety standards and risk management. This process
9

may involve surveys, assessments, and practical evaluations to gauge the effectiveness of

educational efforts in these areas.
