Tiebreaks
In the event there is a tie for any position (including first place), the tiebreak between the players
with the same game points will be broken in the following order:
1. Direct Encounter
2. Buchholz
3. Sonneborn-Berger
4. Rating average of opponent

Tournament Regulations
Registration and Sections
• With registration, the parent, guardian or player agrees to the POPI act.
• The parent, guardian or player agrees that photos and videos will be taken during this event
and give their consent to be posted to social media as well as the Hermanus Chess Club
website.
• Players may be moved to another section at the discretion of the Chief Arbiter, Tournament
Director or Registration Officer.
Default Time
• Blitz Event: No default time for all rounds.
• Rapid Event: No default time for the first round. Empty boards will be manually paired. For all
other rounds there is a default time of 5 minutes. A player who arrives at the board after the
default time has elapsed will forfeit the game unless the Chief Arbiter decides otherwise.
Venue
• Smoking inside any building of the playing area is forbidden. The general rules with regards to
smoking of the playing venue must also be adhered to.
• Any person (Arbiter, Official, Non-Official, Player or Spectator) found to be under the influence
of alcohol, drugs or any other illegal substance will automatically forfeit and immediately be
removed from the tournament. The person may be asked to leave the premises.
• No equipment or furniture of any kind such as chess clocks, chess sets, tables, chairs,
electronic equipment or stationery may be removed from the playing venue
Players
• All players must act in accordance with Article 11 of the FIDE Laws of Chess. Players must
behave in a manner that will not bring the tournament and game of chess into disrepute.
• Players who have completed their game and handed in their result become a spectator and
must leave the playing area.
• No unofficial games shall be played in the playing area during a round or in-between a round.
• Players shall not discuss or analyse a game that is in progress, or has just been completed
while still in the playing area.

• Any incorrect scores must immediately be reported if noticed and will be dealt with on an
individual basis. Both players must agree in person to change the recorded score. Any
incorrect score reported after the start of the following round will not be changed.
Appeals
A player wishing to appeal against a ruling made by an arbiter, must do so immediately after the
game has ended and before the pairings for the next round has been published. Appeals must be
lodged with the tournament director.
Communication
It is highly advisable that all players (and parents of junior players) join the tournament WhatsApp
group to receive updates and communication regarding the event. Pairings will be published to
Chess-Results as well as the WhatsApp group on the day of the tournament.

Dress code
Players must always be dressed neatly and look presentable. Players must always wear shoes or
sandals whilst inside the playing area.
Catering
There will be a tuckshop as well as other food vendors in operation for the duration of the main
rapid event on Saturday the 20th of April.
The Hermanus Chess Club reserves the right to change any aspect of the tournament including
but not limited to the venue, sections, format, time control, dates, number of players and prize
funds. Any changes will be communicated to players through the tournament WhatsApp group and
to the email addresses provided by players upon registration.
