ABOUT NALSAR

NALSAR University of Law was established under the Andhra


Pradesh Act 34 of 1998 as a fully residential National Law
University, offering an integrated five-year law course.
Indisputably, NALSAR counts as one of the best law schools
in the country. NALSAR has fast emerged as the pacesetter in
legal education. NALSAR University of Law was awarded an
'A++' grade with a CGPA of 3.60 out of 4.00 by National
Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

ABOUT
The Bodh Raj Sawhny Memorial Trust,
established in 1999 by Late Mr. Degamber
Sen Sawhny in honor of his father, Justice
Bodh Raj Sawhny, commemorates the
contributions of an eminent jurist born in
Bhera, Shahpur, Punjab (now Pakistan).
Educated at Cambridge University and
Oxford University, where he excelled in law
and sports, Justice Sawhny returned to
India and practiced law in Lahore. He

BODH RAJ notably defended his father, Lala Hans Raj


Sawhny, and Sardar Ajit Singh in the Pindi
Armoury case, securing their acquittal.

SAWHNY Appointed Chief Judge of the J&K Judicial


Service in 1910, he played a key role in
drafting the constitution of the High Court

MEMORIAL of Jammu and Kashmir, where he served


from 1928 to 1936, including a tenure as
Acting Chief Justice. Additionally, he was

TRUST honored with the title of Rai Bahadur and


served as Superintendent of the Camp
during the Coronation Durbar of King
George V and Queen Mary in 1911.
ABOUT
THE VIDHI CENTRE FOR LEGAL POLICY

The Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy ('Vidhi') is an independent think-


tank doing legal research to make better laws and improve
governance for the public good. Vidhi does this through high quality,
peer reviewed original legal research; through engaging with the
Government of India, State governments and other public
institutions to both inform policy- making and to effectively
convert policy into law; and through strategic litigation petitioning
courts on important law and policy issues. Vidhi's abiding values are
non-partisan engagement, research excellence and independence.
MOOT OVERVIEW
The objective of the 17th NALSAR - Justice B.R. Sawhny Memorial Moot Court
Competition 2024 is to stir up research and indulgence in poignant issues in
Constitutional Law.

The competition is scheduled to be held from 4th to 6th October 2024 in an


offline format. The moot will be judged by the revered scholars of the
Constitutional Law who have expertise in the legal issues stated in the Moot
Problem. The moot is being organized in collaboration with the Justice Bodh
Raj Sawhny Memorial Trust.

ALOK PRASANNA
Alok Prasanna Kumar is Co-Founder and Lead, Vidhi Karnataka. His areas
of research include judicial reforms, Constitutional law, urban
development, and law and technology. He graduated with a B.A. LL.B.
(Hons) from the NALSAR University in 2008 and obtained the BCL from
the University of Oxford in 2009. He writes a monthly column for the
Economic and Political Weekly and has published in the Indian Journal of
Constitutional Law and National Law School of India Review apart from
media outlets such as The Hindu, IndiQuint and Caravan.

RITWIKA SHARMA
Ritwika is a Senior Resident Fellow and Lead at Charkha, Vidhi’s
Constitutional Law Centre. Her current research is focused on
comparative federalism, local governments, and electoral reforms. From
2014-17, Ritwika was a Research Fellow in the Public Law vertical at Vidhi.
She advised several departments and regulatory authorities under the
Government of India, on questions concerning constitutional validity of
proposed legislation, legislative competence of the Union and states, and
contours of the powers and functions of regulators.

NANI A PALKHIVALA

Nani Ardeshir Palkhivala was a


distinguished Indian jurist,
economist, and diplomat
renowned for his profound
understanding of constitutional
law. He rose to prominence as an
eloquent advocate in landmark
Supreme Court cases, including
the celebrated Kesavananda
Bharati case, which solidified the
doctrine of the basic structure of
the Constitution. His
commitment to upholding civil
liberties and human rights, along
with his extensive work in tax
law, earned him widespread
respect. His legacy as a legal
luminary and public intellectual
continues to inspire generations.

In honor and legacy of the late Mr. Palkhivala, his nephew,
Mr. Homi P. Ranani, has contributed to the prize pool and
established the “Nani Palkhivala Award for Best Speakers.”
