1. GENERAL
1.1 Scope
This Specification and KBR Purchasing Standard P22-2PS cover the requirements for pipe support
components and fabricated assemblies.
The following documents are referenced herein and form part of the order. Additional KBR documents, when
applicable, will be listed on the Requisition. The issue dates of KBR documents shall be as specified in the
Requisition. Current editions of the industry standards including in all mandatory addenda in effect at the
time of the order shall apply. Unless otherwise specified, the date of edition or revision of the referenced
Codes or Industry Standards shall be as specified in Appendix E of ASME B31.3.

2. DESIGN
2.1 General
Item components, accessories, and attachments furnished as a regular part of proprietary or standardized
equipment shall be in accordance with the item Supplier's standards and recognized industry standards
suitable for the specified design conditions.
3. MATERIALS
3.1 General
3.1.1 Materials shall conform to the requirements of MSS SP-58 unless otherwise specified on the drawings.
Spacers, small plates, lugs, and similar small items may be of commercial quality carbon steel material,
unless the material is otherwise specified on the drawings.
3.1.2 Materials and dimensions of commercially procurable items; e.g., clamps, clevises, or U-bolts, which
are catalogued as the Supplier's standard parts, shall be in accordance with MSS SP-58.

3.1.3 Substitution of materials, sizes or shapes shall not be made without the prior written approval of the
Purchaser.
3.1.4 Material subject to welding shall be of weldable quality with less than 0.30% Carbon content.
3.1.6 Parts to be hot-dip galvanized shall be made only from fully killed open-hearth, electric furnace or
basic-oxygen steels.
3.2.1 When the designation of a structural shape or pipe is indicated on the Purchaser's drawings without
showing the weight of the shape, the Supplier shall furnish the standard shape of the least weight under that
description.
3.2.2 The following items, unless otherwise noted on the drawings, shall be in accordance with the following:
a. threads: ASME B1.1 coarse thread series, Bolts Class 1A or 2A, Nuts Class 1B or 2B
b. bolt heads: ASME B18.2.1 heavy hexagon series
c. nuts: ASME B18.2.2 heavy semi-finished hexagon series
d. washer: ASME B18.22.1
e. anchor and structural bolts and nuts: ASTM A307-B/A563-B (except for high-strength)
f. high-strength bolting (bolts, nuts, and washers): ASTM A193/A193M, A194/A194M, or ASTM A325-
Type 1/A563DH
g. material for hanger rods, U-bolts, nuts, and similar items: ASTM A36/A36M
h. structural shapes: ASTM A36/A36M
3.2.3 The Supplier shall supply all bolts, nuts, and washers plus 10% in excess of that required for each
type, diameter, and length.

3.3.2 The Supplier shall be responsible for determining the suitability of the material and laminations.
3.3.3 If the blocks noted are not available to the Supplier, equivalent material may be furnished upon prior
written approval of the Purchaser.
3.4.1 All stainless steel and high alloy (> 9 Cr) pipe support components will not require any surface coating.
3.4.2 All low chrome clamps and pipe support components shall be abrasive blast cleaned in accordance
with SSPC-SP 6 producing an anchor profile of 1 to 2 mils (25 to 50 microns) and coated with high
temperature epoxy applied to a minimum dry film thickness of 4 mils (100 microns). Acceptable coatings
are Ameron Amercoat 253HT, Hempel Hempadur 8567, International Intertherm 228, and Sigma Sigmcover
Miocoat 7427. Finish color shall have a distinct contrast to galvanizing such as white, red or dark gray.
3.4.3 High strength bolts and nuts (ASTM A193/A193M, A194/A194M, A325/A563) shall not be hot-dipped
galvanized but shall be mechanically galvanized in accordance with ASTM B695 Class 50. If bolt size
exceeds mechanical galvanizing capabilities, bolts shall be painted with Lone Star PCI-3 Plus system or
approved equal.
3.4.4 Spring coils shall be neoprene coated in accordance with Technical Standard P26-1TS.
3.4.5 Belleville spring washers shall be mechanically galvanized in accordance with ASTM B695 by the
Belleville spring washer manufacturer.
3.4.6 Cr-Mo clamped shoes shall be sand blasted to SSPC SP-6 and coated with a single coat of epoxy.
3.4.7 All supports not listed above are to be hot-dip galvanized with specific additional requirements as
shown:
a. Remove galvanizing from edge of plate, 1/2 inch (12 mm) up sides of plate and 1/2 inch (12 mm) up
ends of plate at the weld areas of the shoe by grinding to sound base metal. Areas exposed by removal
shall be coated by the support fabricator with either AACCO's Deoxaluminate or Tempil's Aluminized
Bloxide.
b. Eye nut, turn buckles, adjustable base supports, spring housings, load flanges, threaded rods, bolts and
nuts: To avoid difficulty in assembling threaded parts due to galvanizing, it is recommended that male
parts be shaken, spun or hand brushed to remove spelter lumps from the threads. Female machine
threads may be cleaned to accommodate the male thread but not tapped oversize. Regardless of
cleanup method used, threads shall be such that rework is not required to assemble.
c. Bearing plate for cold insulated pipe shoes and their welded attachments shall be galvanized after
welding.
3.4.8 Hot-dip galvanized coatings shall conform to the requirements of ASTM A123/A123M with the
following exceptions:
a. the weight of zinc coating shall not average less than 2.25 oz/ft2 (0.7 kg/m2).

b. no individual specimen shall show less than 2.0 oz/ft2 (0.6 kg/m2) of zinc coating.
3.5.1 Cold insulated pipe shoes shall be furnished in accordance with the drawings and general notes
furnished by the Purchaser. Cold shoe shall be suitable for an operating temperature range of -320 oF to
+180 oF (-195 oC to +82 oC). The polyurethane foam (PUF) Supplier is responsible for the integrity and
strength of the bonded joints. Polyurethane foam Supplier is also responsible for the selection of chemicals,
their proportions, mixing, adequate curing and protection against moisture absorption of the PUF cradles. If
he recommends alternate materials or application methods to those specified, he shall submit those
recommendations with appropriate test data in his proposal for the Purchaser's approval.
3.5.2 The material for the bearing plate shall be ASTM A36/A36M fully killed open-hearth, electric furnace,
or basic-oxygen steel unless otherwise specified on the Purchaser's drawings. See Subparagraph 3.4.6.c for
corrosion protection.
3.5.3 The following proprietary materials shall be used in the fabrication of cold insulated pipe shoes:
Bottom PUF cradle layers shall be bonded by the shoe manufacturer as defined in Drawing CSGEN3.
The adhesive for the above bonding shall be Fastbond Construction Mastic 4323, manufactured by
Adhesives, Coatings and Sealers Division/3M, St. Paul, MN 55144-1000.
c. Protective Coating:
Monolar Mastic 60-59 (gray) adhesive/coating available from the Foster Products Division of H.B. Fuller
Co. and H.B. Fuller licensees to be applied to all (100%) of the PUF Cradle surfaces to a dry thickness
of 0.030 inch (0.80 mm). The Supplier shall supply approximately 15% of the quantity of protective
coating used in the shop fabrication of cold insulated pipe shoes for field repair of minor breaks in the
protective seal.
d. Polyimide Foam
Resilient foam insulation shall be 0.34 lb/ft3 (5.5 kg/m3) nominal density Polyimide foam sheet faced on
one side with a double adhesive coated polyester film tape incorporating a "peel-off" type liner. Foam
shall be supplied in "thermal cut" sheet form (direction of foam rise normal to thickness) with nominal
thicknesses of 1/2 in (12 mm), 3/4 in. (20 mm), 1 in. (26 mm) or 1 1/4 in. (32 mm) as specified by the
Purchaser. Tape shall be a high tack, moderate dead load acrylic adhesive film, coated on both sides of
a high quality polyester film, ADCHEM Corporation 256M or an approved equal.

Cold shoe Supplier shall supply the following additional polyimide foam sheets (without the peel-off liner)
as construction spare material: One sheet each 150 mm wide and 1000 mm long in thicknesses 32 mm,
26 mm, 20 mm, and 12 mm. These foam sheets shall be shipped in a sealed polyethylene bag with a
weatherproof note on the outside of the bag stating "POLYIMIDE FOAM CONSTRUCTION SPARE" in
75 mm high letters.
Aluminum metal cladding shall be in accordance with ASTM B209 Alloy 3105 or 3003, Temper H-14.
Thickness of sheeting shall be 0.015 inch (0.4 mm). No color coating is required for aluminum sheeting.
Cold shoe Supplier shall supply one coil 914 mm wide (minimum) and 30 m long of the specified
thickness of aluminum cladding as construction spare material. A weatherproof note shall be provided
on the outside of the coil stating "ALUMINUM CLADDING CONSTRUCTION SPARE" in 75 mm high
letters.
Filament tape used by field during the installation of shoe Type CS4 (Ref. Drawing CSGEN2) shall be
1 inch (25 mm) wide Scotch Filament Tape 898, or equal. Cold shoe manufacturer shall ship sufficient
quantity of filament tape along with cold shoes (CS4 Type only). Consider two (2) full wraps at three (3)
locations of each shoe assembly for estimating tape quantity. Also consider 50% surplus quantity as
construction allowance.
Self sealing lap double coated film tape used on the overlap portion of the vapor barrier film shall be:

Vapor retarder tape used by field during the shoe installation (Ref. Drawing CSGEN2, Sketch D) shall
be:

This tape is used by Field when the vapor barrier film overlap portion is damaged during installation or
when a shoe for some reason requires re-installation. Shoe manufacturer to ship sufficient quantity of
this tape along with the cold shoes. Assume that 50% of the cold shoes require vapor retarder tape for
estimating quantity of the tape.
Belleville spring washer shall be made of AISI C1075 supplied with mechanical zinc galvanizing in
accordance with ASTM B695 by the manufacturer. Size and number of washers shall be as specified
by the Purchaser. The following spring manufacturer and product is acceptable:
Cold shoe Supplier shall supply 20% additional quantity of Belleville spring washers as construction
spare. Each size of spring washer shall be packaged separately with size noted legibly on the outside
of each package. Total spare spring washers required for each individual shipment of cold shoes shall
be included with the shipment and identified by legible, waterproof markings which state
"CONSTRUCTION SPARE - BELLVILLE SPRING WASHERS."
Full-weight polyethylene construction film shall be supplied in roll form, 900 mm wide (minimum) by
0.15 mm thick (minimum) as manufactured by Tex-Trude or equal. This polyethylene sheeting is to be
used by field forces to temporarily seal off the ends of the cold shoes to prevent moisture absorption.
Cold shoe Supplier shall determine the total length of polyethylene as follows: Consider polyethylene
seals required at each end of cold shoes with 150 mm overlap at the joint; provide 20% additional film
as construction spare. Required quantity of polyethylene sheet shall be supplied with each shipment of
cold shoes.
General-purpose duct tape shall be 50 mm wide Nashua 396 or equal. Duct tape will be used by field
forces to seal the polyethylene sheet to the cold shoe and pipe at the shoe ends. Cold shoe Supplier
shall calculate the total length of tape required as follows: Consider two full wraps of duct tape at each
end of each cold shoe; provide 20% extra tape as construction spare. The required quantity of duct
tape shall be supplied with each shipment of cold shoes.

3.5.4 Adhesive bonding, curing, and surface preparation (between PUF cradle layers and between vapor
barrier film and PUF cradle) shall be in accordance with the adhesive manufacturer's instructions. Any waxy,
smooth surfaces such as mold release film must be removed prior to application of adhesive or protective
coating.
3.5.5 Cradles shall be high density polyurethane foam. Design strength shall be based on ultimate
compressive strength with a minimum safety factor of 5, or that which results in a 1% deflection, whichever is
less, and shall have the following properties:
a. Polyurethane foam shall satisfy the flame spread requirements of UL 94. The minimum percentage of
weight retention of the foam when tested in accordance with ASTM D3014 shall be 75%.
b. Average density of PUF cradle shall be verified by dividing the weight of the cradle by its volume.
Average density shall be within ± 5% of the specified density, for both 14 lb/ft3 (224 kg/m3) and for
20 lb/ft3 (320 kg/m3) PUF cradles. Average density for 10 lb/ft3 (160 kg/m3) shall be within -0% and
+10%.
1. Polyurethane foam for both upper and lower cradle (Drawing CS1 and CS2) shall have a nominal
density of 10 lb/ft3 (160 kg/m3) and a minimum design compressive stress of 45 psi (0.31 MPa)
based on an ultimate compressive strength of 220 psi (1.52 MPa) in accordance with ASTM D1621.
2. Double cold shoe for guide (Drawing CS4) applications for both PUF cradles shall be 10 lb/ft3
(160 kg/m3) nominal density with a minimum design compressive stress of 45 psi (0.31 MPa), based
on an ultimate compressive strength of 220 psi (1.52 MPa).
1. Polyurethane foam (Drawing CS1 and CS2) shall have a nominal density of 10 lb/ft3 (160 kg/m3)
and a minimum design compressive stress of 45 psi (0.31 MPa), based on an ultimate compressive
strength of 220 psi (1.52 MPa), for the upper cradle. The lower cradle shall have a nominal density
of 14 lb/ft3 (224 kg/m3) and a minimum design compressive stress of 80 psi (0.55 MPa) based on an
ultimate compressive strength of 400 psi (2.76 MPa).
2. Double cold shoe for guide (Drawing CS4) applications, for both PUF cradles shall be of 10 lb/ft3
(160 kg/m3) nominal density with a minimum design compressive stress of 45 psi (0.31 MPa), based
on an ultimate compressive strength of 220 psi (1.52 MPa).
1. Polyurethane foam (Drawing CS1 and CS2) shall have a nominal density of 10 lb/ft3 (160 kg/m3)
and a minimum design compressive stress of 45 psi (0.31 MPa), based on an ultimate compressive
strength of 220 psi (1.52 MPa), for the upper cradle. The lower cradle shall have a nominal density
of 20 lb/ft3 (320 kg/m3) and a minimum design compressive stress of 182 psi (1.25 MPa) based on
an ultimate compressive strength of 911 psi (6.28 MPa).
2. Double cold shoe for guide (Drawing CS4) applications, both PUF cradles shall be of 14 lb/ft3
(224 kg/m3) nominal density with a minimum design compressive stress of 80 psi (0.55 MPa) based
on an ultimate compressive strength of 400 psi (2.76 MPa).
f. Minimum value for the ultimate compressive strength for samples taken from the core i.e., within the
middle 60% of the thickness for all densities shall be within 10% of the specified values.

g. The thermal conductivity of the polyurethane foam at -256 °F (-160 °C), in accordance with ASTM C177,
shall be within ± 5% of the values specified below. Samples shall be taken from the core within the
middle 60% of the thickness, where it is practical.
4. FABRICATION
4.1 General
4.1.1 The following requirements apply to all fabricated support assemblies, rod hanger assemblies, spring
hanger support assemblies, and all special assemblies as detailed on the pipe support drawings:
a. Each rod shall be cut and threaded. Each assembly shall be completely fabricated and assembled
unless otherwise specified on the drawings.
b. If the completed assembly is over 8 feet (2.4 m) in length, one of the rods shall be removed and firmly
wired to the balance of the assembly.
4.1.2 The fabrication of structural steel shall conform to the AISC Specification for the Design, Fabrication,
and Erection of Structural Steel for Buildings. Welding shall be in accordance with AWS D1.1.
4.1.3 The design and fabrication of spring units shall be in accordance with MSS SP-58 and the applicable
portions of the applicable piping code ASME B31.1 or B31.3.
4.2 Holes
4.2.1 The edge distance from the center of a punched, reamed, or drilled hole to the edge of a structural
shape shall be 1.75 times the nominal bolt diameter, unless otherwise specified on drawings.
4.2.2 Holes drilled in structural shapes shall be located on standard gage lines unless otherwise noted on
the drawings.
4.2.3 Hole sizes in structural shapes for rods 1 inch (25 mm) in diameter and smaller shall be 1/8 inch
(3 mm) larger than the rod size; and for rod sizes greater than 1 inch (25 mm) holes shall be 1/4 inch (6 mm)
larger than the rod size.
4.3 Welds
Welds shall be 1/4 in. (6 mm) continuous fillet unless otherwise specified on the drawings. Welds and
welding operators shall conform to AWS D1.1.
Note: For metal thickness less than 1/4 inch (6 mm), the fillet shall be equal to the metal thickness.

4.4 Springs
4.4.1 See Article 3.4 for galvanizing of housings and neoprene coating of coils.
4.4.2 Spring coils shall be of the helical type enclosed by a suitably constructed steel housing with
provisions for visual inspection of internal parts. The construction of the housing and internals shall include
measures to prevent the complete release of the spring load in case of spring coil failure. Construction
procedures for the housings of corrosion resistant springs shall not include any welding after the housing and
closure plate have been hot dip galvanized. Mechanical methods (e.g., bolts and snap rings) shall be used
for attaching the galvanized closure plate. Closure shall be made after the neoprene coated spring coil has
been placed inside the housing.
4.4.3 Each spring unit shall be factory preset to the specified erected load and shall be provided with travel
stops which lock the piston plate against upward and downward movement. Erected and hot load markings
shall be die-stamped on the load-travel scale and indicated by means of permanently secured appropriately
identified metallic buttons.
4.4.4 The installation heights of base-type spring units shall be factory preset to the dimensions specified on
the drawings without encroaching on normal plus or minus tolerances for field adjustment. Springs shall be
furnished with load flanges and center guide load column.
4.4.5 The load indicator shall be an integral part of the piston plate and shall project outward through an
opening in the housing.
4.4.6 Turnbuckles, when furnished as part of the spring unit, shall be designed to permit inspection for
thread engagement.
4.4.7 Spring support fabricator to design and qualify all components of spring support assembly including
the travel stops for the test load specified in the data sheet. Supporting documentation with regard to design
compliance of all load (test load) carrying components of the assembly shall be submitted for review when
hydro-test load is greater than 2 times the installed load.
5.1 General
5.1.1 All material, including bolting, shall be packaged or bundled by area and shipped at one time. When
this is not possible, the material shall be shipped by area or groups, in accordance with an area priority
designated by the Purchaser. Partially shop fabricated assemblies shall be banded or wired together.
Material for different areas shall not be mixed during packaging. Each package or bundle shall be color
coded in accordance with the Purchase Order. Color code paint shall not be applied to galvanized surfaces.
5.1.2 Bolts, nuts, and washers that are not part of support assemblies shall be lightly greased and packed in
boxes or kegs. Loose clips and other small structural parts shall be either boxed or securely attached to
larger parts with galvanized wire.
5.1.3 Each completely shop fabricated support and the individual parts of a partially shop fabricated support
shall be plainly marked either by stenciling with contrasting waterproof paint in 1 inch (25 mm) high letters
with proportional width and line weight or by attaching a metal tag with the individual mark number. All alloy
pipe clamps shall be individually tagged as alloy with their mark numbers as follows: Mark Number - Alloy
Clamp. Example "CP9 or CP18 - Alloy Clamp". Cold insulated pipe shoes shall be identified with the shoe
mark number and, if applicable, with the support assembly mark number. Figure 1 shows a mark number
example.

5.1.4 Care shall be taken to protect polyurethane cradles of cold insulated pipe shoes from damage during
shipment or jobsite storage. All polyurethane foam supports shall be packed in a waterproof lined shipping
container. The shipping container shall be made of a minimum 1/2 inch (12 mm) sheathing. The sides,
base, and lids are to be solid with no gaps. The container shall also have a minimum of two (2) 3 inch
(75 mm) thick runners on the bottom. The crates shall be stencil marked and color coded as required.
5.1.5 Shipping and storage instructions shall be provided by the polyurethane cradle Supplier. This is to
ensure that the polyurethane cradle will be shipped and/or stored in an environment with proper ventilation
and air circulation to avoid possible damage.
5.1.6 All spring housings shall be furnished with an aluminum or brass nameplate, permanently attached
with screws or rivets. The following data shall be stamped or etched on the nameplate:
a. Supplier's name
5.1.7 Each spring housing shall be identified by the Purchaser's mark number, die punched on the housing
or stamped, or etched on the nameplate.
5.1.8 Travel stops or hydrotest pins on spring assemblies shall be prominently tagged with instructions for
their removal. The instructions shall state:
Any deviation to the above shall be identified by Purchaser and tagged accordingly by Supplier.
