Preventive security measures at airports

Growth in passenger travels requires maintaining and improving the efficiency and effectiveness
of passenger screening operations which starts from check-in to the boarding gate. Airport is a
hub for the daily movement of a large number of passengers and for the handling of high
volumes of baggage and cargo. And their Security remains a top priority at every airport. As the
aviation industry evolves, it is required to meet constantly changing security standards at
airports. To apply preventive security measures, the airports and airlines have an increasing need
to use technology to meet their security goals.
For security and safety reasons, all departing passengers are to pass through security screening at
the checkpoint prior to boarding aircraft.

At the checkpoint, passengers are reminded that sharp items, such as nail clippers, scissors,
pocket knives and metal nail files, should not be packed in carry-ons. Detection of these items at
screening points may increase the wait time for passengers. Passengers are advised to ensure any
items of this kind are packed in their checked luggage.
Passenger must not carry any inflammable liquid, gasses or other dangerous goods with them or
in their bags. Because passengers and airport visitors are warned that all threats and comments
made about carrying of weapons or explosives - whether intended as a joke or not - will be taken

,
seriously and may result in refusal of carriage onto the flight and prosecution. They must not
joke about having a bomb or firearm in their possession. Security personnel are trained to react
when they hear these words. Penalties can be severe, and can include the possibility of time in
prison or fines.
To ensure the security and safety, all passengers with medical conditions are required to undergo
screening by technology or a pat-down at the checkpoint. Such passengers should provide the
officer with the SA notification card or other medical documentation to describe their conditions.

If the passenger’s TSA PreCheck® designation has been verified at the airport, they do not need
to remove shoes, laptops, 3-1-1 liquids, belts, or light jackets during the screening process.
However, if they are required to undergo additional screening for any reason, a pat-down may be
required, which includes the removal of items such as shoes, belts, or light jackets. Also, TSA
officers may swab their hands, mobility aids, equipment and other external medical devices to
search for explosives using explosives trace detection technology (ETD). Also carry-on baggage
and other accessible property will undergo standard screening in standard lanes, including
removal of laptops, 3-1-1- liquids, and CPAP and BiPAP machines used for positive airway
pressure therapy.

,
Electronic devices, such as any types of laptops, pagers, must be removed from bags at the
security point and screened separately so as not be damaged by x-ray machines. Checked
baggage is also subject to screening.
Baggage must never be left unattended within terminal areas. Security Agents strongly advise
passengers to keep their luggage with them at all times. Any unattended luggage in the terminal
are treated as suspicious and removed by the security services and may be destroyed. All
baggage should be clearly tagged with the passengers’ contact details. For security reasons
passengers should keep their carry-on luggage and handbags with them and make sure that they
are closed.
Passengers should watch their bags while they are at the airport and don't accept packages from
strangers. They have to answer questions about who packed the bags and whether they might
have left them unattended at any time. According to the security procedures, passengers should
think carefully and answer honestly (in a truthful, fair, or honorable way), because criminals and
terrorists often use unaware passengers to carry restricted or dangerous items on board the
aircraft, either by tricking passengers into carrying packages or by simply slipping items into
unwatched bags.

REMEMBER:

-Remove and separate oversized electronics (laptops, full-size video game consoles, DVD
players, and video cameras that use cassettes) from your carry-on for proper screening.
-You will need to remove large electronics from your carry-on bag at the checkpoint for separate
X-ray screening.

,
-Unless you receive specific instructions, small electronics, such as smartphones, tablets and
certain other mobile/portable electronic devices, can stay in your carry-on bag.
-Prepare a 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag of liquids before arriving at the airport.
-Pack all coats and jackets in checked baggage when possible. All coats and jackets must go
through the X-ray machine.
-Do not wrap gifts. If security officers need to inspect a package, they may have to unwrap it.
Don’t wrap gifts until you reach your final destination.
-Film. Pack undeveloped film in your carry-on bag. If you have film that is faster than 800-
speed, tell a TSA officer who will manually inspect the film instead of placing it through the X-
ray.
-When in doubt, leave it out. Unsure if you can bring an item through the checkpoint. Put it in
your checked baggage or leave it at home.

Airport STEP from check-in to the boarding gate

STEP 1 Check-in
At check-in counter, airport staff will check your passport and travel documents and issue a
printed boarding pass. Check-in may be done at the counter or at a self-service kiosk. The check-
in deadline is one hour before the departure time depending on the airlines.
STEP 2 Baggage check-in
If passengers have baggage to check in, they come to the "baggage counter".
If they do not have baggage to check in, they proceed to the security checkpoint.
STEP 3 Security inspection
 Security inspections at each airport have been tightened to prevent hijacking and terrorism.
Security will double check that passengers are not carrying dangerous goods.
STEP 4 Customs control
Officials at customs are checking travelers for things like whether they have the right documents
to be in the country, whether they're legally allowed to be there, and whether they're bringing or
carrying anything illegal with them
STEP 5 Immigration inspection
 Passengers show their passport and boarding pass to the immigration Officials. Depending on
the country, they may need to fill out an immigration card.
STEP 6 Boarding gate
Passengers come to the boarding gate at least 30 minutes before the departure time. They
present their boarding pass and passport to the airport staff, i.e. border officer.
