THE HIMALAYAN SCHOOL

GRADE 3 – SCIENCE

CHAPTER – 7
SOLID, LIQUID AND GASES
I. Match the following:
1. Solid - Water
2. Liquid - melting
3. Gas - table
4. Solid to liquid – oxygen

Answers:

1. Solid – table

2. Liquid - water

3. Gas - Oxygen

4. Solid to liquid - melting

II.Fill in the blanks:

1. A solid can neither change its shape nor it can flow.

2. A Liquid takes the shape of the container it is kept in.
3. We cannot see a gas but we can smell it.
4. The process of change of a liquid to solid is called freezing.

III.State true or false:

1. A solid has a fixed shape and size- True

2. A liquid can be poured and spilled – True
3. Water exists only in liquid state – False
4. The process of change of a gas to a liquid is called condensation – True

IV. Give reasons for the following statements:

1. A pencil and a book are solids
Because it has a fixed shape and size and it occupies space.
2. Liquid take the shape of the container they are poured in
Because liquid does not have fixed shape and size.

V. Answer the following questions briefly:

1. What is a substance?

A substance is a pure type of solid, liquid and gas. It is not a mixture.

Example – Salt, sugar etc.

2. Can solid behave like a liquid?

Some solids like sand, flour, salt and sugar can behave like liquid. It can be poured and it
can take the shape of the container.

3. What is evaporation?
When a liquid changes to a gas this process is called evaporation
4. What is condensation?
When a gas changes to liquid this process is called condensation.

V. Answer in detail:

1. Write the properties of solid and liquid?

Properties of solid:

A solid have fixed shape and size

It occupies space and has weight

It can neither change its shape nor it can flow.

Properties of liquid:

A liquid does not have a fixed shape and size.

It can flow easily

Liquid takes the shape of the container.

2. Write the properties of gas?

A gas has no shape or size

It fills all the available space

We cannot see the gas but we can smell it

3. Explain the particle arrangement in solid , liquid and gases

Solid – The particles are tightly packed

Liquid – The particles are loosely packed

Gases – The particles move freely. They have lot of space
