Chemistry

Unit: 6 (Thermodynamics)

Class XI

LEVEL- 1
1. In equation N2 + 3 H2  2 NH3 , what would be the sign of work done?[Hint: In this equation,
volume decreases. So, the sign of work done will be positive.] (1)

2. Which of the following is an intensive property:

Surface tension, mass, volume, enthalpy, density (1)

3. Which of the following is not state function: (1)

(a)U +PV, (b) q +w, (c) qrev/T, (d) q

4. Starting with the thermodynamic relation H =U + PV derive the following relation

ΔH = ΔU + ΔngRT (2)

5. Give one difference between: (3)

(a) isothermal and adiabatic process
(b) enthalpy of formation and enthalpy of reaction
(c ) closed and isolated system

LEVEL- 2

1. Give one limitation of 1st law of thermodynamics. (1)

2. Why does NH4NO3 dissolve in water spontaneously even when this process is
endothermic? [Hint: the increase in disorder (entropy) upon dissolution of this strong
electrolyte.] (1)

3. What happens to the internal energy of the system if: (1)

work is done on the system (b) work is done by the system

4 . Calculate the work done in following cases- (2)

(i) one mole of an ideal gas contained in a bulb of 10 L capacity at 1atm is allowed to
enter into an evacuated bulb of 100L capacity.
(ii) One mole of a gas is allowed to expand from a volume of 1L to 5L against the
constant external pressure of 1atm. (1Latm=101.3J)
[Hint: Using the formula w = –Pext × ΔV]
(Ans (i) 0 (ii) -405.2J)

5. How do the strengths of bonds in the reactants compare with those of their counter parts in the
products for
(i) Endothermic reaction
(ii) Exothermic reaction (2)

6. An exothermic reaction X →Y is spontaneous in the back direction. What is the sign of ∆S for
the forward direction? (2)

7. Is ∆H always greater than ∆U. Explain why or why not? (2)

[Hint: ΔH is not always greater than ΔU because ΔH=ΔU+ Δng RT
Δng may be +ve or -ve
If np−nr =+ve (np : no. of moles of gaseous products and nr: no. of moles of gaseous reactants)
ΔH=ΔU+RT]

8. Enthalpy and entropy changes of a reaction are 40.63KJ/mol and 108.8 J/K/mol respectively.
Predict the feasibility of the reaction at 270C. [Hint: Using the formula, ΔG=ΔH - T ΔS] (2)

9. Calculate ∆G0 for the reaction: (3)

4NH3(g) + 5O2(g) → 4NO(g) + 6H2O(l)

Given that ∆fG0 for the formation of NH3(g), NO(g) and H2O(l) are -16.8KJ/mol,+86.7 KJ/mol
and -237.2 KJ/mol respectively. Predict the feasibility of reaction.

[Hint: Using the formula

LEVEL- 3

1.Under what conditions will a reaction be spontaneous if : (1)

(a) both ∆H and ∆S are positive (b) both ∆H and ∆S are negative

2. Calculate the bond enthalpy of Cl-Cl bond from the following data: (2)

CH4 (g) + Cl2 (g) CH3Cl (l) + HCl(l) ∆H= -100.3 KJmol-1
Given are the bond enthalpies of C-H, C-Cl, and H-Cl bonds are 413, 326, and 431 KJmol-1

[Hint: Using the formula

3. Calculate the temperature above which the following reaction occurs (3)
2 NaHCO3 (s) ® Na2CO3 (s) + H2O (g) + CO2 (g)
Given: ∆f H○ (kJ/mol) NaHCO3 (s) = -947.7, Na2CO3 (s) = -1130.9, H2O (g) = -241.8,
CO2 (g)= -393.5

S○ (J/K/mol) NaHCO3 (s) = 102.1, Na2CO3 (s) = 136.0, H2O (g) = 188.8 , CO2 (g)= 213.7
[Hint: Calculate ∆r H○ and ∆r S○ and then put ∆r G○ = 0] (Ans Above 386.5K)
4. Give reasons:
(i) All living systems need to be open systems. [Hint: you exchange both matter and energy with
your environment]
(ii) The dissolution of NaCl(s) in water is endothermic but it dissolves. [Hint: the enthalpy
change during the process under standard condition is slightly positive.]
(iii) Neither q nor w is a state function but q+w is a state function.
(iv) A real crystal has more entropy than an ideal crystal
(v) An exothermic reaction may not be thermodynamically spontaneous. [Hint: even if it is
accompanied by a decrease of randomness, the heat released is absorbed by the surroundings so
that the entropy of the surroundings.]
