Illustrating Theorems on Triangle Inequalities

Solution

a. Using the hinge theorem

You are given that ̅̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ , and you know that ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ by the Reflexive
Property of Congruence. Because 64° > 61°, m WXZ > m YXZ. So, two sides of
△WXZ are congruent to two sides of △YXZ, and the included angle in △WXZ is
larger.
Hence, by the Hinge Theorem, ̅̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅.

ly
b. Using the converse of the hinge theorem

On
You are given that ̅̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ , and you know that ̅̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅̅ by the Reflexive
Property of Congruence because of 34 centimeters > 33 centimeters, ̅̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅.

m
So, two sides of △MNK are congruent to two sides of △KLM and the third side of
△MNK is longer.

ea
Therefore, by the Converse of the Hinge Theorem, m KMN > m MKL.
