b) A resistance of 10Ω is connected in series with the two resistances 6 L3 1
each of 15Ω arranged in parallel. What resistance must be shunted
across this parallel combination so that the total current taken will be
1.5A from 20V supply.
c) Derive the equations for star to delta and delta to star transformation. 8 L3 1

2. a) Find the current through 10ohm using superposition theorem 8 L3 1

b) State and explain Ohm’s law with its limitations. 6 L1 1


c) State and prove maximum power transfer theorem. 6 L2 1

3. a) Develop an equation for the power consumed by an R-L series circuit, 8 L3 2
Draw the waveforms of voltage, current and power.
b) Define (i) Real Power (ii) Reactive Power (iii) Apparent Power (iv) 6 L1 2
Power factor.
c) A circuit consists of a resistance of 20, an Inductance of 0.05H 6 L3 2
connected in series. A supply of 230V at 50Hz is applied across the
circuit. Determine the current, power factor and power consumed by
the circuit.

4. a) A Pure capacitor excited by sinusoidal varying AC voltage, show that 8 L2 2
the average power consumed is zero.
b) In an RLC circuit, Explain with vector diagrams when (i) XL> XC (ii) 6 L2 2
XL< XC
(iii) XL=XC
c) The equation of an alternating current is given by i=42.42sin628t. 6 L3 2
calculate its (i) Maximum value (ii) Frequency (iii) RMS value (iv)
Average value (v) Form factor (vi) Peak factor.
Module – III
5. a) With the help of neat diagram, explain the construction of DC 8 L2 3
generator.
b) With usual notations, develop the torque equation of a DC motor. 6 L2 3
c) A 4 pole 220V, lap connected D.C shunt motor has 36 slots, each slot 6 L3 3
containing 16 conductors. It draws a current of 40 A from the supply.
The field resistance and armature resistance are 110 Ω and 0.1 Ω
respectively. The motor develops an output power of 6 KW. The flux
per pole is 40 mWb. Calculate (a) the speed (b) the torque developed
by the armature and (c) shaft torque.

6. a) Obtain the expression for EMF equation of a DC generator. 7 L2 3
b) How back emf regulates the armature current in a D.C. motor? 7 L3 3
Explain with relevant equations.
c) In 110V, short shunt compound generator, the resistance of the 6 L3 3
armature, shunt and series field windings are 0.06 Ω , 25 Ω and 0.04Ω
respectively. The load consists of 200 lamps each rated at 55W,110
V. Find the generated E.M.F and the armature current.
Module – IV
7. a) Hoe rotating magnetic field is set up in case of three phase induction 8 L3 4
motor? Illustrate with neat figures.
b) Differentiate between the squirrel cage and wound rotor three phase 6 L1 4
induction motor.
c) A 3 phase induction motor with 4 poles is supplied from an alternator 6 L3 4
having 6 poles and running at 1000 r.p.m. calculate (a) Synchronous
speed of the induction motor (b) Its speed when slip is 0.04 (c)
Frequency of the rotor e.m.f. when the speed is 600 r.p.m.

8. a) State the difference between Star and Delta quantities with proof. 6 L2 4

b) What are the advantages of three phase AC quantity and also mention 6 L1 4
its limitations.
c) Three loads, each of resistance 30, are connected in star to a 415 V, 4 L3 4
3-phase supply. Determine (a) the system phase voltage, (b) the
phase current and (c) the line current.
d) A 50Hz, 6 pole induction motor has a full load percentage slip of 4 L3 4
30%. Find the synchronous speed and actual speed.

Module –V
9. a) Derive the E.M.F equation of a transformer and hence obtain the 6 L3 5
voltage and current transformation ratio.
b) Explain the working principle of FUSE and MCB 4 L3 5
c) A 600 KVA transformer has an efficiency of 92% at full load, unity 4 L2 5
p.f. and half full load, 0.9 p.f. Determine its efficiency at 75% of full
load and 0.9 p.f.
OR
10. a) What is Earthing? With a neat diagram explain plate earthing. 8 L2 5
b) Explain Two way and Three way control of lamps. 6 L2 5
c) What is one of the most common causes of electrical shock? How 6 L5 5
many volts can a human sustain? What is first aid treatment for
electric shock?
