The Great Gatsby

Nick Caraway was a Yale man. He returned from World War I and became a bond
salesman. He moved to a Long Island suburb called West Egg and rented a small house
beside a mansion owned by a man named Jay Gatsby. West Egg was full of newly rich
people, but East Egg was where the “old rich” live.
One evening, Nick went to the house of Tom Buchanan, one of his old collegiate buddies
from Yale, and Daisy, Nick’s cousin. Buchanan was physically strong, extremely wealthy
and hid a burning aggression. Daisy was the most beautiful girl and her family was rich.
Unfortunately they were unhappy. There, Nick met Jordan Baker who was Daisy’s best
friend. After dinner, Nick saw Gatsby staring across the bay at a green light. He was a
mysterious man.
One day, Nick went with Daisy’s husband, Tom, to the city. On the way, they stopped in
a run-down area called the “Valley of Ashes,” where Tom visited his mistress, Myrtle
Wilson. Tom told her to meet him later at the train station. They all got drunk in the city
that night, and Tom ended up striking Myrtle in the face because she did not stop talking
about Daisy.
One summer evening, Nick attended a huge party at Gatsby’s mansion, where he heard
scandalous rumors about his neighbor. He spent most of the night with Daisy’s friend
Jordan Baker, wandering through Gatsby’s house until they finally met Gatsby, who was
charming and personable. At one point, Gatsby went off alone with Jordan and told her
something, but she did not tell Nick what he had said.
Next day, Nick went into the city with Gatsby and met one of his business partners,
Meyer Wolfsheim, whose suspicious demeanor made Nick wonder if Gatsby was
involved in organized crime.
After this, Nick went to meet Jordan for tea. She told him that Daisy had spent a bit of
time with a young soldier when they were in Louisville, and now Jordan realized that that
soldier was Jay Gatsby. But he had to go to war, they lost contact and Daisy ended up
getting engaged to Tom. Before the wedding, Daisy had received a mysterious letter and
she had changed her mind. At the end she married Tom and they went on their
honeymoon. Soon after, Daisy had a baby girl.
Jordan told Nick that Gatsby wanted Nick to arrange a meeting without telling Daisy
about his plan. Nick agreed to invite Daisy over for tea so Gatsby could see her. First,
Daisy and Gatsby’s reunion at Nick’s house was awkward. Gatsby invited Nick and Daisy
back to his house where Daisy was brought to tears by Gatsby’s lavish lifestyle, his
collection of English shirts, and how Gatsby had longed for her.
One Saturday night, Daisy and Tom attended one of Gatsby’s parties, even though Tom
disliked and was suspicious of Gatsby, but they left after Tom made disparaging remarks
about Gatsby to Daisy. Nick reminded Gatsby that he couldn’t re-create the past he once
had had with Daisy.
One afternoon, Tom realiced that Gatsby and Daisy had feelings for one another and
decided that the group had to drive into the city. While at the Plaza Hotel, Tom confronted
Gatsby, accusing him of lying and bootlegging. Tom forced Gatsby to drive Daisy home.
When Nick, Jordan, and Tom drove through the valley of ashes, they discovered that
Gatsby’s car had struck and killed Myrtle, Tom’s lover. They went back to Long Island,
where Nick learnt from Gatsby that Daisy was driving the car when it struck Myrtle, but
that Gatsby intended to take the blame. The next day, Tom told Myrtle’s husband, Wilson,
that Gatsby was the driver of the car. Wilson deduced that the driver of the car who had
killed Myrtle must have been her lover. Wilson found Gatsby in the pool at his mansion
and shot him. He then fatally shot himself.
Nick arranged a small funeral for Gatsby, ended his relationship with Jordan, and moved
back to the Midwest to escape the disgust he felt for the people surrounding Gatsby’s
life. Nick realized that Gatsby’s dream was destroyed by wealth and dishonesty, like the
American dream.
