Important events of Pre-Partition
Simon Commission (1927)
1. Lord Irwin was Viceroy of India
2. Commission was appointed in November 1927 by the British Conservative Government
3. Commission Dispatched to India in 1928 to review the Government Act 1919
4. This commission consisted of 7 members
5. Chairman of commission was Sir John Simon
6. In 1930, the Commission published its two-volume report known as Simon Report
7. Indians boycotted the Simon Commission

Nehru Report (1928)


1. This report was prepared by a committee chaired by Motilal Nehru and his son Jawaharlal
Nehru
2. This committee included two Muslim League representatives, Syed Ali Imam and Shoaib
Qureshi
3. Nehru demanded many constitutional reforms
4. Muhammad Ali Jinnah said that Nehru report was an attempt to secure the pre-domination of
Hindus over Muslims

Quaid-e-Azam 14 Points (1929)


1. On March 28, 1929, Quaid-e-Azam termed the Nehru Report as a “Hindu Document” and
presented his 14 points
2. He demanded some constitutional reforms to safeguard the political rights of Muslims in self-
governing India.
3. Sind should be separated from Bombay presidency

Allahabad Address (1930)


1. Allahabad address was delivered in 1930
2. First time Allama Iqbal suggested to create a separate Muslim state in the Northwest of India

Round Table Conferences (1930, 1931, 1932)


1. Series of meetings in three sessions called by the British government to consider the future
constitution of India
2. Gandhi started Civil Disobedience Movement on March 12, 1930 with his famous Dandi March
3. First Round Table conference was announced in response of Civil Disobedience Movement in
1930
4. Congress boycotted First Round Table conference
5. In 1931 the Gandhi-Irwin pact was signed. This was a political agreement signed by Muhatma
Gandhi and Lord Irwin, Viceroy of India
6. Second Round Table conference was held in 1931 in London
7. After the failure of 2nd conference Ramsay MacDonald (British Prime Minister) announced the
Communal Award in 1932
8. According to Communal Award, the right of separate electorate was not only given to the
Muslims of India but also to all the minority communities in the country
9. Poona Pact was an agreement between Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi signed
on September 24, 1932
10. Third Round Table conference was held in 1932
11. British government announced White Paper 1933
12. White paper contained proposals for a new constitution

Government of India Act, 1935


1. This act was passed by British Parliament in 1935
2. Provinces were given more authority
3. The whole country was divided into 11 provinces
4. This act provided for the creation of Sindh and Orissa
5. Burma was separated from India in 1937

Indian Provincial Elections (1937)


1. Elections were held under the Act of 1935, in 1937
2. Congress won the absolute majority in the five provinces
3. Congress ministries were formed in July 1937
4. Sikandar Hayat Khan was the premier of Punjab
5. Fazl-ul-Haq was the premier of Bengal
6. Congress quit ministries in 1939
7. After this quit, the Muslim League observed the “Day of Deliverence” on December 22, 1939

Lahore Resolution (1940)


1. Also known as Pakistan Resolution, was written and prepared by Muhammad Zafar-ul-Allah
Khan
2. This resolution was presented by A.K. Faz-ul-Haq on March 23, 1940
3. The resolution consisted of 5 paragraphs
