Vocabulary for Describing Maps

Describing Location:

• Adjacent to: The park is adjacent to the school.


• North/south/east/west of: The river is west of the city center.
• On the outskirts of: The industrial zone is located on the outskirts of the town.
• In the vicinity of: The new shopping mall is in the vicinity of the railway station.
• Alongside: The highway runs alongside the residential area.
• Bordering: The commercial district is bordering the lake.
• In close proximity to: The new bus station is in close proximity to the main road.

Describing Changes Over Time:

• Transformed into: The farmland was transformed into a residential area.


• Converted into: The old factory was converted into a museum.
