FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

Given:
Modules of elasticity = E (kN/m2)
Poisson’s ratio = v (ratio)
Plate thickness = t (m)
Element Area = 0.5xbxh
Element stiffness matrix calculation : [K member] = [k element 1] = t1A1 [B1]T[D1][B1] + [k element 2] = t2A2 [B2]T[D2][B2]
1) Brake plate up in triangle elements. Number the nodes / connections counter clockwise.
2) Element 1 3) Element 1 4) Element 1
=
5) Element 1 6) [k element 1] = t1A1 [B1]T[D1][B1] 7) [k element 2] = t2A2 [B2]T[D2][B2]
number matrix anti clockwise: number matrix anti clockwise:
[B]T =
8) [K member] = [k element 1] + [k element 2]
number matrix so that you start with the nodes where displacement will occur and supported nodes last. Its easier to arrange matrix for
displacement calculation. Say node 1 and 4 is supported then: [K member]
9) Calculate displacements: {F} = [K member] {d}
{Forces applied at nodes} = [Member stiffness matrix] x {displacement vector}
= x
Say node 1 and 4 is supported, then there will be no displacements at these nodes, thus the only used matrix will be the block area above.
If worked in meters at the start, displacement will be in meters. KEEP ALL DECIMALS FOR FURTHER CALCULATIONS.
10) Calculate element stresses (kN/m2) : {σ1} = [D1][B1]{d1} {σ2} = [D2][B2]{d2}
{Stress vector Element 1} = [D1][B1]{d1} {Stress vector Element 2} = [D2][B2]{d2}
Die {d} vector moet al Die {d} vector moet al
die element 1 se nodes >>> die element 1 se nodes >>>
11) Answers will be (kN/m2): bevat soos regs getoon. bevat soos regs getoon.
σx1 σx2
σy1 & σy2
Txy 1 Txy 2
12) Principal stresses = σ element 1 = σ element 2 =
Principal angles = θp element 1 = θp element 2 =
