Week 06. Fluid Mechanics.

Topic: Fluid Kinematics.

• Lagrangian and Eulerian Descriptions
• Motion and Deformation of Fluid Elements
• Fluid Kinematics: Problems Solving on Black Board

Q1. The actual path travelled by an individual fluid particle over some period is called a

(a) Pathline
(b) Streamtube
(c) Streamline
(d) Streakline

Q2. If the vorticity in a region of the flow is zero, the flow is

(a) Incompressible
(b) Compressible
(c) Irrotational
(c) Rotational

Q3. The angular velocity of a fluid particle is 40 rad/s. The vorticity of this fluid particle
is
(a) 20 rad/s
(b) 40 rad/s
(c) 80 rad/s
(d) 10 rad/s

Solution:

Figure: The direction of a vector cross product is determined by the right-hand rule

The symbol 𝜁⃗ used for vorticity is the Greek letter zeta, and 𝜔⃗⃗ is used to denote the rate of
rotation vector (angular velocity vector).
Vorticity is equal to twice the angular velocity of a fluid particle
Now, Vorticity = 2×angular velocity = 2×40 = 80 rad/s

Q4. A cart is moving at a constant absolute velocity of Vcart = 10 km/h to the right. A high-
speed jet of water at an absolute velocity of Vjet =15 km/h to the right strikes the back of
the car. The relative velocity of the water is

(a) 0 km/h
(b) 5 km/h
(c) 10 km/h
(d) 15 km/h
Solution: Relative velocity= Vjet - Vcart = 15-10 = 5 km/hr

Q5. A steady, incompressible, two-dimensional velocity field is given by

V = (u, v) = (2.0-1.6x) i + (0.9+1.6y) j
where the x- and y-coordinates are in meters and the magnitude of velocity is in m/s. The
values of x and y at the stagnation point, respectively, are
(a) 0.9375 m, 0.375 m
(b) 1.563 m, -0.4375 m
(c) 1.25 m, -0.5625 m
(d) -1.6 m, 0.8 m

Solution:

u= 2.0-1.6x
v=0.9+1.6y

Stagnation point means velocity zero i.e. u=0, and v=0

Now,
2.0-1.6x = 0
x = 1.25 m

Similarly,
0.9+1.6y = 0
y= -0.5625

Q6. The local acceleration in the x-direction is given by-

𝜕𝑢 𝜕𝑢
a. 𝑢 𝜕𝑥 + 𝜕𝑡
𝝏𝒖
b. 𝝏𝒕
𝜕𝑢
c. 𝑢 𝜕𝑡
d. 𝑛𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑣𝑒

of the fluid at (1, 1, 2) is –

a. 4j + 10k
b. 4i + 10k
c. J+k
d. 4i + 10j

Solution:

the angular velocity (in radians/unit time) at point (0, -1, 1) is-
a. 0 rad/sec
b. 1 rad/sec
c. 1.5rad/sec
d. 2rad/sec.
