Course Description

The aim of the subject is to introduce to candidates the basic framework for understanding the whole process of
entrepreneurship and developing theoretical and practical capabilities in creation, development and operation of
entrepreneurial ventures.

Course Objectives
The main objectives of the subject include:
 Introducing to candidates’ concepts and framework of entrepreneurship
 Developing appreciation of theories that have been proposed to explain entry and success in business
 Imparting necessary skills in establishing, managing and facilitating growing business ventures
 Enabling students to identify the challenges faced by entrepreneurs and the ways of meeting them in a competitive
business environment
 Developing appreciation of the role of business networks and building capabilities in using those networks to
enhance performance of entrepreneurial ventures.

Learning outcomes
After completing this subject student will be able to;
i. Interpret and apply entrepreneurship principles and theories in emerging, surviving and growing ventures.
ii. Acquire entrepreneurial tendencies and inclination to behave in a more enterprising manner
iii. Develop preference to entrepreneurship.
iv. Portray innovativeness and creativity in identifying business opportunities, deciding on ventures to start and
operating the business
v. Tackle the challenges facing entrepreneurs in the competitive environment

Course Contents
Topics to be covered in this course include:

1. Foundations of Entrepreneurship: Characteristics of entrepreneur, benefits of entrepreneurship, Potential


drawbacks of entrepreneurship, Mistakes of entrepreneurship.
2. Business Model Canvas: Business idea, sources of business idea, elements of a business model canvas, niches
of business model canvas.
3. Business Management and entrepreneurship: Small Business Basics, Steps for starting a small business, the
concept of enterprise location.
4. Types of business and Legal Aspects of Entrepreneurship: Introduction, business registration and
incorporation, sole proprietorship, partnership, corporations, limited and unlimited liability company, NGOs,
importance of business registration.

5. Forms of business: start-ups (a business from scratch), buyout (buying an existing business), and franchising
(operating a business under license).
6. Business Competitive Analysis: SWOT analysis (what, why and hows of SWOT analysis) and Porter’s Five
Forces Analysis (What, why and hows of PFFA).

7. Building a Marketing plan: Pinpointing the target market, determining customer needs and wants, how to
conduct market research, building a competitive edge, Location criteria for retail and service businesses overview
of search engine marketing; overview of social media marketing.
8. Creating a business plan: Why develop a business plan, Elements of a business plan, what investors look for
in a Business plan, Business plan format.

Mode of Delivery

This course utilizes a range of teaching modalities including lectures, presentations, class discussions, hands-on
activities, YouTube videos and other multimedia, and guest lectures where necessary.
