Estimation of Soil Erosion Using Soil Loss Equation (USLE)

I. Introduction

II. Objectives:
1. To compute the amount of soil erosion using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE)
based on the provided data and conditions.
III. Materials:

 Calculator
III. Instructions:
You are provided with the following data for a hypothetical agricultural field. Use the Universal
Soil Loss Equation (USLE) to estimate the annual soil loss.
Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE):

Where:

IV. Problem and Data

1. Use the USLE model to calculate the annual soil loss from an experimental site (slope
steepness of 3.7%, length of 183 m). The annual rainfall is 660 mm, and the erosivity is
432 MJ mm ha⁻¹ h⁻¹ yr⁻¹. Tillage practice is mulch tillage and sown with corn. The
particle distribution: clay (<0.002mm) 26%, silt (0.002-0.02mm) 30%, very fine sand
(0.02-0.1mm) 36%, and sand (>0.1mm) 8%.. The organic matter in the soil is 4.2%. The
soil structure is medium or coarse granular, and its permeability ranges from moderate
to rapid.
2. Use the USLE model to evaluate the change in erosion rate in the field runoff from the
previous problem when (a) mulch tillage is changed to conventional tillage, or (b) the
cover cash crop corn is change to mungbean.
3. Write you conclusion/realization base from what you solved.
V. Questions:
1. What is the significance of each factor (R, K, LS, C, P) in the Universal Soil Loss Equation
(USLE), and how do they individually affect soil erosion?
2. What practical measures can be taken by farmers to reduce the soil erodibility factor
(K) in highly erodible areas?
3. How does soil erosion negatively impact agricultural productivity and the environment
in the long term? Provide examples.
4. Given two agricultural fields with different values for the K factor, how would soil
texture (such as sandy, silty, or clayey soil) contribute to these differences in soil
erodibility?
VI. Conclusions:
