Proposal and Projects Guidelines

General Guidelines
1. Title and the preliminary pages
2. Table of content and the topic/heading numbers.
3. The details of the document and labeling of the Diagrams and tables.
4. References - APA style.
5. The Work Plan and Budget.
6. General formatting- Size 12, double spacing. Look at the space between paragraphs, size of the
paragraphs.
7. Page numbering bottom center- Preliminary pages Roman numbers, Chapter one onward Arabic
numbering.

Research Work.
Proposal
i. During course work, the student comes up with a topic of study after which he
she/writes a proposal.
ii. The Department appoints one supervisor for the student in line with University
Statutes.
iii. The student works with the supervisor until the proposal is completed.
iv. The student defends the proposals at the Department and Faculty
v. Two (3) copies of the approved proposal are submitted to the department with a copy
of the abstract. the abstract should contain:-
a. Student’s name and admission number
b. Faculty and Department
c. Title of the Study
d. An abstract of one continuous paragraph signed by the student and supervisors
vi. The school submits the results of the proposal to JKUAT for processing approval and
confirmation of supervisor.
Data Collection and System Development

1. The student gets a letter from the Director, Postgraduate studies to introduce him/her to
the National council for Science and Technology for research authorization/permit.
2. On getting the permit, he/she proceeds to the field and collects data/ requirement
specification.
3. He/She analysis the data and prepares the System design Specification
4. After preparing design Specification the student writes the system codes and performs
testing
5. The student then prepares the system documentation which the student shall submit
6. Three (copies) of the project shall be loosely bound and submitted to the office of the
head of school for the final Defense. After the defense, the result is communicated to the
student as either a fail, pass with major, pass with minor corrections or pass.
7. Upon successful defense, the student takes Three (3) copies of the hard bound Project to
the Head of School
8. The Department sends the names of the successful candidates to Senate for approval for
graduation.

 Geographical description of the study (Target population)
 Sample and the sampling techniques
 Instruments of data collection
 Data collection procedures
 Methods of data analysis

CHAPTER FOUR: REQUIREMENT SPECIFICATION AND SYSTEM DESIGN

N/B Proposal ends at chapter 4

CHAPTER FIVE: CODING AND TESTING OF RESULTS

 A brief introduction of the chapter


 Presentation of the system following the specifications derived from the objectives of the
study.
 Discussions of the results at the end of each sub-section

CHAPTER SIX: SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS &


RECOMMENDATIONS

 A brief introduction of the chapter


 Summary of the findings of the study (they shall be stated under each theme driven from
the objectives of the study)
 conclusions (they shall be stated under each theme derived from the objectives of the
study)
 Recommendations (they shall be stated under each theme derived from the objectives of
the study)
 Suggested area for further study
