I. LEARNING COMPETENCY: Graphs and illustrate a Linear
Function and its (a)domain; (b) range; and (c) slope
( M8AL-IId-e-1)

II. BACKGROUND
Recall that in the previous lesson it was discussed that a
Linear function is a function whose graph is a line that continues
infinitely in each direction. Any real number can be substituted
for x and get a meaningful output and there is no restriction on
the range, thus, the Domain is a set of real numbers, that is
and whose Range is also a set of real numbers, that is
.

Slope is defined as the ratio of vertical change between two

points (rise) to the horizontal change between the same two
points (run).
or

The slope of a line is usually represented by m, thus

or

where ( represents the 1st point

and ( represents the 2nd point.
The order of the x and y coordinates both in the numerator
and denominator must be strictly followed to determine the right
slope.

Positive Slope and Negative Slope of Linear Function

Positive Slope Negative Slope

This graph has a positive slope This graph has a negative slope
since , thus, the line rises since , thus, the line falls
from left to right. from left to right.

The x-intercept is the x-coordinate of a point where a

line crosses the x-axis. The y-intercept is the y-coordinate
of a point where a line crosses the y-axis.

There are two ways in writing the Linear Function:
A. Slope-intercept Form: ; where m represents
the slope of a line and b its y-intercept
B. Standard Form: ; which when rewritten into
slope-intercept form will result to the formula for slope
, where A is the numerical coefficient of x and B
is the numerical coefficient of y.
Graphing linear functions can be done using any of the four
methods:
1. Using two points
2. Using x- and y- intercepts
3. Using the slope and the y-intercept
4. Using the slope and a point
Steps in graphing Linear Function using Two Points:
1. Determine the two points by assigning any two values to x
and solving for the corresponding values of y.
2. Plot the points on the Cartesian Coordinate Plane.
3. Draw a line connecting the two points.
Steps in graphing Linear Function using x and y-intercepts:
1. Let in the equation & solve for x (the value of x is the
x-intercept).
2. Plot the point on the x-axis
3. Let in the equation & solve for y (the value of y is the
y-intercept).
4. Plot the point on the y-axis
5. Draw a line connecting the points.

Steps in graphing Linear Function using slope and y-intercept:

1. Determine the y-intercept and plot it on the y-axis.

MARYMAR T. EMBORNIZA, NOHS 12/2020
2. Determine the slope (m) and use it to locate the second
point. Starting at the y-intercept, count out the number of
rises and runs to determine the 2nd point.
3. Draw a line connecting the points.
Steps in graphing Linear Function using slope and a point:
1. Plot the given point.
2. Use the given slope (m) to locate the second point. Starting
at the plotted point, count out the number of rises and runs
to determine the 2nd point.
3. Draw a line connecting the points.

IV. ACTIVITY
GRAPHING LINEAR FUNCTIONS
Example 1: Using Two Points
In geometry, two points determine a line. Since the graph of
the linear equation is a line, thus two points are enough to
draw its graph.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
How will you graph the function ?
Solution:
STEP 1. Assign any two values of , then solve for the
corresponding values of .
If If

MARYMAR T. EMBORNIZA, NOHS 12/2020
IF Furthermore, if , then . So,
the ordered pairs are and . This means that the
line passes through these points.
STEP 2. Plot the Points; and

STEP 3. Draw a line connecting the points.

The line obtained is the

graph of the linear
function .
The line rises from
left to right.

Domain (D):
Range (R)
Slope (m)
Recall that a linear function can be written in slope-
intercept form , where m is the slope. Since the
given equation is in this form, you can easily see
that m =2.
Also, since the slope is positive our graph rises from left to
right.

Example 2: Using the intercept and intercept
Aside from two points, Linear Function can be graphed using
-intercept and -intercept . The - and -intercepts of the
line represent two points whose coordinates are (x, 0) and (0,
y). Thus, the intercepts are enough to graph the Linear
Function.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
How will you graph the function using the
intercepts?

Solution:
STEP 1. Let in the equation & solve for (the value of
is the ).
If

Substitute 0 to .
Solve for .
Divide 3 to both sides of the equation.
The - intercept is 2.
STEP 2. Plot the point ( ) on the -axis.

Substitute 0 to
The - intercept is 6.
STEP 4. Plot the point ( ) on the -axis.

STEP 5. Draw a line connecting the points.

The line obtained is

the graph of the linear

The line falls from
left to right.

The linear function is in the standard form
, the slope can be determined using the formula
slope .

Determine the values of A and B

Substitute the values of -3 to A and 1 to B

The slope is .
The slope is negative, thus, our graph falls from left to right.

Example 3: Using the Slope and the intercept

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
How will you graph the function using the slope
and the - intercepts?
Solution:
STEP 1. Determine the -intercept and plot it on the y-axis.
Since the equation is in slope-intercept form
, we can directly determine the intercept,
thus, the -intercept ( ) is .

STEP 2. Determine the slope (m) and use it to locate the second
point. Starting at the y-intercept, count out the number of rises
and runs to determine the 2nd point.
Since the equation is in slope-intercept form, we
can directly determine the slope, thus, the slope is 2.

Since the slope is 2 or

run

rise , from the
(2) intercept move 2 units
up and 1 unit to the right,
which will give (1, -1),
another point on the line.
STEP 3. Draw a line connecting the points.

The line obtained is

the graph of the linear
function .
The line rises from
left to right.

Domain (D)
Range (R)
Slope (m)
The slope is positive, thus, our graph rises to the right.
