I. LEARNING COMPETENCY: Graphs and illustrate a Linear
Function and its (a)domain; (b) range; and (c) slope
( M8AL-IId-e-1)
II. BACKGROUND
Recall that in the previous lesson it was discussed that a
Linear function is a function whose graph is a line that continues
infinitely in each direction. Any real number can be substituted
for x and get a meaningful output and there is no restriction on
the range, thus, the Domain is a set of real numbers, that is
and whose Range is also a set of real numbers, that is
.

2. Determine the slope (m) and use it to locate the second
point. Starting at the y-intercept, count out the number of
rises and runs to determine the 2nd point.
3. Draw a line connecting the points.
Steps in graphing Linear Function using slope and a point:
1. Plot the given point.
2. Use the given slope (m) to locate the second point. Starting
at the plotted point, count out the number of rises and runs
to determine the 2nd point.
3. Draw a line connecting the points.

GRAPHING LINEAR FUNCTIONS
Example 1: Using Two Points
In geometry, two points determine a line. Since the graph of
the linear equation is a line, thus two points are enough to
draw its graph.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
How will you graph the function ?
Solution:
STEP 1. Assign any two values of , then solve for the
corresponding values of .
If If

IF Furthermore, if , then . So,
the ordered pairs are and . This means that the
line passes through these points.
STEP 2. Plot the Points; and
Domain (D):
Range (R)
Slope (m)
Recall that a linear function can be written in slope-
intercept form , where m is the slope. Since the
given equation is in this form, you can easily see
that m =2.
Also, since the slope is positive our graph rises from left to
right.

Example 2: Using the intercept and intercept
Aside from two points, Linear Function can be graphed using
-intercept and -intercept . The - and -intercepts of the
line represent two points whose coordinates are (x, 0) and (0,
y). Thus, the intercepts are enough to graph the Linear
Function.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
How will you graph the function using the
intercepts?
Solution:
STEP 1. Let in the equation & solve for (the value of
is the ).
If
Substitute 0 to .
Solve for .
Divide 3 to both sides of the equation.
The - intercept is 2.
STEP 2. Plot the point ( ) on the -axis.

The linear function is in the standard form
, the slope can be determined using the formula
slope .
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE
How will you graph the function using the slope
and the - intercepts?
Solution:
STEP 1. Determine the -intercept and plot it on the y-axis.
Since the equation is in slope-intercept form
, we can directly determine the intercept,
thus, the -intercept ( ) is .
