SC 342- DESIGN PROJECT

DESIGN OF REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURE: CONSIDERING

SHEAR WALL, CRACKING THEORY, TORSION AND SLAB THEORY
ACADEMIC YEAR 2020/2021
DEADLINE JULY 30,2021

In Figure 1 shown is a floor plan of an office building 60.0m high. The building is a
framed-shear wall structure in which the walls play the role of bracing the structure and
loads distribution . The storey height from the floor finishing level to the next floor level
is 4.00 m. Make any correction or additions if necessary to the architectural drawing in
order to suit for engineering design. Use BS 8110, Part 1,2 and 3, BS 6399, Reynold
Manual

The design data is as follows:

Loads
-Soil bearing pressure = 250 kN/m2
-Wind speed (V) = 40 m/s
- Use manual to get others

Characteristic strength of materials

-Characteristic strength of concrete, fcu = 30.00N/mm2
-Characteristic strength of steel, fy, fyv = 460/250n/mm2

Size of members and specifications

-Concrete cover for slab = 25mm
-Concrete cover for columns and foundations = 40mm
-Size of columns = 400 x750 mm
-Provide any other assumptions deemed necessary for carrying out your design

Tasks:
(i) Usage of Manual, Loading codes, or Handbook for structural designer (10%)
(ii) Prepare the structural layout drawing showing all structural elements. (5%)
(iii) Estimate suitable element dimensions. (5%)
(iv) Carryout the load analysis assuming that the structure is to be subjected to
vertical and lateral loads (10%)
(v) Describe the methodology on how you will design the said building
considering the locally available materials (5%)
(vi) Design the first-floor slab (typical floor slab) assuming that the size of beams
b/h = 300/500 mm. (5%)
(vii) Design the Shear wall marked A, assuming that the vertical floor loads are
uniformly distributed along the wall axis. For lateral loads refer CP 3 or BS
6399 Part 2. (10%)
(viii) Identify maximum loaded column, at the ground floor, What are proposed
detailing technique to prevent cracks? What are crack widths when the
diameter used is 32mm? (5%)
(ix) Identify and list all beams that are experiencing Torsion forces in the first floor
and in the 10th Floor (5%)
(x) Design foundation at the stair well and shear walls (10%)
(xi) Propose the type of slab to be used, thickness and design the slab with
maximum span in both ways structural drawings showing reinforcement details
as well as bar bending schedules for the slab. (10%)
(xii) Prepare a structural drawing for just one storey showing the reinforcement
sectional plan and elevation details for the Shear Wall marked A. (10%)
(xiii) Prepare Structural Design Report for submission to the Municipal comprising
all components listed above (10%)

Total points equal 100% (carrying a weight of 20% of the whole course assessment).

TIPS

1. Use software only on identifying beam that are experiencing Torsion

2. USE MANUAL, SPREADSHEET, CHARTS to design all components, If
you are to Use software USE for checking only
3. The incomplete REPORT IS ZERO!!! No building can stand with slab
hanging on air, or just beams with column or slab!!
4. Drawings should be in AUTOCAD
5. Structural Design Report can be Typed OR Handwritten
6. This is the key assignment, the failure of this assignment, is the failure of
the whole course, you will repeat the whole course
7. The work can be discussed with your friends, however the presentation,
writing, final works should be done by yourself. ALL WORKS WILL BE
CHECKED IF ARE RESEMBLING WITH OTHER WORKS, ALL
TRACES OF SIMILARITY WILL BE CHECKED, DOCUMENTED AND
BE USED AGAINST YOU.
