HEAT LOAD CALCULATION step by step for restaurant:

Layout as per attached drawing

Design input

A. Restaurant walls are normal Brick wall of 10 inch thick with 0.56 U factor
B. Floor slab U factor 0.22
C. POP ceiling U factor 0.79
D. full height glass for restaurant as shown in the layout
E. Glass U factor is 0.60 & Glass SHGC is 0.36
F. Select Glass SCL (solar radiation heat gain) from ISHARAE table no. 1.10
G. Restaurant ceiling height 15 feet and false ceiling height 10 feet
H. Dry bulb temperature 96-degree Fahrenheit & outside wet bulb 74-degree Fahrenheit. consider
design indoor temperature as 75-degree Fahrenheit
I. RH 60 % and Delta W 150 Gr / lb for outdoor and 65 Gr / lb for indoor
J. Consider AHU coil bypass factor as 0.12 and contact factor 0.88
K. CFM per person & CFM per area as per ISHARE table 1.53
L. Equipment and lighting heat gain as per ISHARAE tables
M. Assume suitable DATA for any missing data in this design input

1. The conduction heat gain load from external walls & roof & glass
Q = U * A * CLTD or Delta T
For CLTD refer ISHARE DATA book Table No. 16.2.1
For Climate condition refer ISHARE table No.16.1.1
For wall U factor refer ISHRAE table no.16.2.2
A. Wall from staircase & lobby side:
Area: total area including door 21.6 x 10 feet = 216 sqft
Btu / Hr = Area x u factor x delta
= 216 x 0.56 x 0
=0
Note : since lobby and staircase area is air conditioned , so there is no heat gain from this wall

B. Wall from kitchen side:

Area: total area including door & shaft 19.2 x 10 feet = 192 sqft
Btu / Hr = 192 x 0.56 x 7.4 = 795.648 Btu / Hr

Note : Kitchen inside temperature considered as 28 degree ( 82.4 Fahrenheit )

C. Conduction heat gain from two sides full height glass

Corner curved glass 12 feet west side : 12 feet length & 10 feet height
West side straight glass 9.6 feet & 10 feet height
North side straight glass 9.6 feet & 10 feet height
Total length of the glass 31.29 feet
Btu / Hr = 312.9 x 0.60 x 21 = 3942.54 Btu / Hr

2. Solar radiation heat gain through full height glass

The equation used for radiant sensible loads from the transparent/translucent elements such as
window glass, skylights and plastic sheets is:
H = A*(SHGC)*(CLF)
Where
• H = Sensible heat gain (Btu/Hr)
• A = area of roof, wall or glass calculated from building plans (sqft)
• SHGC = Solar Heat Gain Coefficient. ( ISHARE TABLE 1.8)
• CLF = Solar Cooling Load Factor. Solar cooling load factor ( ISHRAE table 1.10 )

One glass is on north side and another glass is of west side

North side solar radiation heat gain 50 & west side glass 163 & SHGC for glass 0.36

Btu / Hr. for north side glass = 128 x 0.36 x 50 =2304 Btu/ Hr
Btu / Hr. for west side glass = 206 x 0.36 x 163 =12088 Btu / Hr

3. Heat gain from Ceilings & Floors

The equation used for sensible loads from the ceilings and floors:
H = U * A * (Ta - Tr)
Where
• H = Sensible heat gain (Btu/Hr)
• U = Thermal Transmittance for roof or wall or glass. See ISHRAE 1.20 )
• A = area of partition, ceiling or floor calculated from building plans (sq-ft)
• Ta = Temperature of adjacent space in °F (Note: If adjacent space is not conditioned and
temperature is not available, use outdoor air temperature less 5 ° F)
• Tr = Inside room design temperature of conditioned space in °F (assumed constant usually 75°F)

A. Heat gain from floor: below the restaurant there is a basement so we can consider 28 degree
Total floor area = 402 sqft & Floor slab u factor 0.22
Btu / Hr. = 402 x 0.22 x 7.4
= 654 Btu / Hr
B. Heat gain from ceiling
Since above the restaurant false ceiling temperature is approximate 26 degree ( 78 F )
U factor for POP ceiling approximate 0.79 (normally given by architect)

Btu/ Hr= 402 x.79 x 3 = 952 Btu / Hr.

4. People
The heat load from people is both sensible load and the latent load. Sensible heat is transferred
through conduction, convection and radiation while latent heat from persons is transferred
through water vapour released in breathing and/or perspiration. The total heat transferred
depends on the activity, clothing, air temperature and the number of persons in the building.
H sensible = N * (H S ) * (CLF)
H latent = N * (H L)
Where
• H se ns ib le = Total Sensible heat gain (Btu/hr)
• H la t en t = Total latent heat gain (Btu/hr)
• N = number of people in space.
• HS, HL = Sensible and Latent heat gain from occupancy is ISHRAE TABLE 1.24
• CLF = Cooling Load Factor, by hour of occupancy.
Note: CLF = 1.0, if operation is 24 hours or of cooling is off at night or during weekends.
The sensible heat influence on the air temperature and latent heat influences the moisture content
of indoor space.

Restaurant is 25-seater, so we can consider 25 guests plus 5 persons as serving person

As per ISHARE restaurant sensible heat gain for people 280 & 270 latent heat gain per person

Btu / Hr = 30 x 280 = 8400 Btu / Hr. Sensible heat gain

Btu / Hr. = 30 X 270 = 8100 Btu / Hr latent heat gain

5. Lights
The lights result in sensible heat gain.

Btu / Hr = 3.41 * W * F UT * F BF * (CLF)

Where
• H = Sensible heat gain (Btu/hr)
• W = Installed lamp watts input from electrical lighting plan or lighting load data
• F BF = Lighting use factor, as appropriate
• F BF = Blast factor allowance, as appropriate
• CLF = Cooling Load Factor, by hour of occupancy. See
Note: CLF = 1.0, if operation is 24 hours or if cooling is off at night or during weekends.

Total lighting wattage in the restaurant ( 2 watts / sqft ) = 370 x 2 = 740 wats

Btu/ Hr. = 3.41 x 740 = 2523 Btu / Hr .

6. Appliances
List of appliances in restaurant
1. Oven 2000 watts (only sensible heat)
2. Coffee machine 1500 watts (sensible and latent heat)
3. Computer 250 watts two numbers (only sensible load )
4. Printer 450 watts one number (only sensible load )
Btu/ Hr. = 3.41 * W * F u * F r * (CLF)
Where
• Sensible heat gain (Btu/hr)
• W = Installed rating of appliances in watts. See ISHARE 1.32
manufacturer’s data. For computers, monitors, printers and miscellaneous office equipment, see
ASHRAE Fundamentals, Chapter 29, Tables 8,9 & 1

Additional factors can be used of DATA is available or consider 1 as factor

• F u = Usage factor. See 1997 ASHRAE Fundamentals, Chapter 28, Table 6 and 7
• F r = Radiation factor. See 1997 ASHRAE Fundamentals, Chapter 28, Table 6 and 7
• CLF = Cooling Load Factor, by hour of occupancy. See 1997 ASHRAE Fundamentals, Chapter 28,
Table 37 and 39. Note: CLF = 1.0, if operation is 24 hours or of cooling is off at night or during
weekends.

Total wattage of the appliances for sensible load : 4750

Btu / Hr (sensible) = 3.41 x 4750 = 5834 Btu / Hr

Total wattage of the appliances for Latent load: 1500

Btu / Hr (sensible) = 1540 Btu / Hr ( as per ISHRAE table 1.32 )

7. Heat gain from outdoor air:

CFM calculation as per CFM per person method & CFM as per area (ISHARE 1.53)
For restaurant CFM per perosn 7.5 & CFM per area 0.18
CFM = number of people x required CFM per person
= 30 x 7.5
= 225 CFM
CFM as per total area = 370 x 0.18 = 66.6
Total CFM = 291 ( 225 + 66.6 )
So. heat gain from outdoor air =
The sensible loads from outdoor air are calculated using equations below
QS = 1.08 x airflow x ΔT ( Btu / Hr )
= 1.08 x 291 x 21 = 6599 Btu/ Hr

The latent load from outdoor air is calculated using equations below
QL = 0.7 x airflow x ΔW (Btu/ Hr) (ΔW as per design input given in this assignment or it can be found
out by using Psychrometric chart)

QL = 0.7 x 291 x 85 = 17314 Btu / Hr

ΔW = ( Outdoor condition grains of water – indoor condition grains of water )
ISHRAE TABLE 1.41 for Delta W

Infiltration air FLOW : CFM = VOLUM X 0.3 / 60

= 370 x 0.3 / 60 = 18.5 CFM

Sensible heat gain from infiltration air = 1.08 x 18.5 x 21 = 420 Btu/ Hr
Latent heat gain from infiltration air = 0.7 x 18.5 x 85 = 1100 Btu/ Hr
8. Total sensible heat gain: 44512 Btu / Hr + 3338 (safety factor 7.5 % )= 47850 Btu / Hr
Total latent heat gain : 28054 Btu / Hr + 1402 ( safety factor 5 % ) = 29456 Btu / Hr
Total room heat load = 77306 Btu/ Hr , so total TR capacity 6.4 TR

9. Effective sensible heat factor & ADP selection

ESHF = sensible heat gain / (sensible heat gain + latent heat gain)

ESHF = 47850 / 77306 = 0.61

Select the Apparatus dew point as per ISHRAE table number 1.40, selected ADP 55

10. Calculation of dehumidified air CFM

Bypass factor 0.12 & contact factor 0.88

Dehumidified. Rise = Contact Factor x (Rm Temp. - ADP) = 0.88 x (75 – 55 ) = 17.6

Dehumidified CFM = Room sensible heat /1.08/Dehumidified. Rise

=47850 / 1.08 / 17.6 = 2517 CFM
