ABSTRACT 3

 It is the cheapest available energy at all over the world.

 Output of solar can be change in a large amount.
 Batteries are utilized to provide a central power source
through solar power is generated at the different
generating sources.
 Leveling the output voltage by increasing the ramp
rate.
 Needs, importance, advantage of using the battery for
energy purposes.
 Load can absorb the reactive power and battery can
used to inject the reactive power.
INTRODUCTION 4

 Conventional energy source which is responsible for global

warming, environmental balance and habitat.
 Solar energy is the most important energy for solving the above
problem.
 Photovoltaic panel convert the sunlight directly into electricity.
 Photovoltaic cell is a semi conductor diode that convert visible light
into DC current.
 As per the availability of sun we have to have some special things to
store energy and use it back when the sun is not available.
 We can connect the storage elements to many conventional
energy like Tidal energy , wind energy, solar energy , geothermal
energy and etc.
BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM 5

 BESS consist of battery bank, transformer, Circuit breakers and some power
electronic devices Like inverter and etc.
 BESS is connected to the grid in parallel with the source.
 Battery bank consist of many batteries that is connected in Series- parallel
configuration for the application.
 Nameplate power is given in KW,MW and minimum time is given in KWH,
MWh.
 When grid requirement is lower than solar power production the extra
energy boost by the battery bank.
 Most BESS control systems can be operated via Automatic Generation
control (AGC).
CONTINUE….. 6

 Various control algorithm have been used for PV applications that

provide control of ramp rates, frequency support, and services
designed to optimize the financial returns of the PV installation.

ELECTRIC STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES 7

 There are many storage development technologies like

I. Batteries
II. Flywheels
III. Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES)
IV. Pumped Hydropower
PUMPED HYDROPOWER 8

 It has been developed since 1992 which is an oldest electric storage

technology.
 Operation:
 Conventional hydro consist of two reservoirs, both of them are
made in two different levels, water present at higher level consist of
potential energy, this potential energy is converter in to electrical
energy when the water is released from the upper reservoirs to the
lower reservoirs, while water to flow through the hydraulic turbine
which generate electrical power higher than 100MW.
COMPRESSED AIR ENERGY STORAGE 9

(CAES)
 It is a popular energy storage technologies for bulk storage.
 Operations:
 CAES system store energy by compressing air within an air reservoir
using a compressor powered by low cost electric energy.
 During charging the plants generator operates in reverse as motor
to send compressed air into the reservoir.
 When the plant discharged it uses compressed air to operate the
combustion turbine generator.
 This method is more efficient because natural gas is burn in this
process, the CAES plant is uses all its mechanical energy to
generate electricity
AVAILABLE TYPES OF BATTERIES 10

 Lead acid battery was the only battery that was economically
feasible.
 Improved Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries are now
emerging in utility system.
 Recently Lithium Ion batteries and Zinc/Bromide are going to be the
developed types of batteries.
LEAD ACID BATTERIES 11

 High maintenance requirement

 High cost
 Less Depth of Discharging (30 and now it is developed to 50)
 Huge applications in uninterruptable (UPS) power supplies.
 The largest installed capacity is in china, California ( 40MWh).
VALVE REGULATED LEAD ACID 12

BATTERIES (VRLA)
 Same electrochemical technology as Flooded lead acid batteries.
 Consist and closed with a pressure regulated valve.
 The Acid electrolyte is immobilized and this eliminate the needs to
add water to the cell to keep electrolyte functioning properly.
BATTERIES THAT ARE USES IN UPS 13

 Batteries application are hugely used in UPS

 Flooded cell batteries, sealed-cell batteries, and flywheel are the
NO1 choice for UPS today.
 Flywheel are useful but due to higher cost, bearing reliability and
environmental issues affects the use of flywheel in UPS.
 Flooded cell batteries are the reliable choice of UPS but it is also
expensive.
RAMP RATE CONTROL 14

 Ramp rate measure that how quickly a plant can change its output.
 Solar plant can change its output when the cloud passes from the
sun.
 The advantages of BESS is to help us in uniform ramp control.
 Here less fluctuation is obtained.
 The ramp control algorithm used in XP-DPR continuously monitor the
real power output of the solar generator.
RAMP RATE CONTROL 15

(CONTINUE…)

 Figure 2) Ramp Rate control to 50KW for a 1MW Photo voltaic installation
and 1,5MW/1MW BESS. A) full day. B) Details of largest events
ADVANTAGE 16

 It is easy accessible, no need to operated by technical person.

 These systems are capable of absorbing and delivering of both
active and reactive power with sub-second response time.
