BASIC ELECTRICAL & ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING
(Common to CE, ME, CSE, IT & FT)

Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70

Answer all the questions
(Use single answer booklet only)
*****
PART – A
UNIT – I
1 (a) State Kirchhoff’s Current and Voltage laws.
(b) Discuss the significance of power factor.
(c) Find the total resistance between the positive and negative terminals of the battery in the figure
shown below. Also find the current flowing in the circuit if the voltage across the terminals
is 200 V.

OR
2 (a) State and explain how superposition theorem is applied for solving a network with an example.
(b) A circuit consists of 25 ohm and a capacitance of 5µF connected in series. If an A.C voltage of
200 V (rms), 50 Hz is applied across the circuit, find the input current, power factor, real power
and reactive power flow in the coil.
UNIT – II
3 (a) Explain the working principle of a single phase transformer.
(b) A 6-pole wave wound dc generator is having 50 slots with 25 conductors per slot and rotating at
1500 rpm. The flux per pole is 0.015 Wb, calculate the emf generated.
OR
4 (a) Explain the principle of operation of 3-phase induction motor with neat sketch?
(b) A single phase transformer has 600 primary and 1200 secondary turns. The net cross sectional
area of the core is 70 cm2. If the primary winding is connected to a 50 Hz supply at 500 V.
Calculate: (i) Peak value of flux density in the core. (ii) Voltage induced in the secondary winding.
(iii) Transformation ratio.
UNIT – III
5 Explain the working of Hydro power station with a neat layout diagram.
OR
6 Explain in detail about primary and secondary distribution system.

NPN transistor. Indicate the cutoff, active and saturation regions.
OR
8 (a) Discuss about V-I characteristics of a P-N junction diode.
(b) Sketch the circuit of inverting summing amplifier using Op-amp to get Vout = -V1 + 2V2 - 3V3.
UNIT – II
9 (a) Briefly explain the characteristics of digital ICs.
(b) Convert the following:
(i) 378.93(10) to Octal and Hexadecimal.
(ii) (5c7)h to Decimal.
