 PHOTOELECTRIC EFFECT AND WAVE THEORY OF LIGHT :
( FAILURE OF WAVE THEORY OF LIGHT TO EXPLAIN THE PHOTOELECTRIC EFFEC ) :
(i) Kinetic energy of photoelectrons does not depend on the intensity of incident radiation:
According to wave theory, the K.E of photoelectrons must be depend on the intensity of incident
light, but according to experimental observations, the K.E of photoelectrons are independent on the
intensity of the incident light.
(ii) Existence of threshold frequency:
As per wave theory of light , electrons are emitted from the metal surface of the metal if it is exposed to a
very intense beam of light.
In other words , there is no role of minimum ( threshold ) frequency of the incident light in the emission of
electrons from the metallic surface.
But , it is also a contradiction to the observation that the frequency of the incident light should be greater
than the threshold frequency to cause photoelectric emission.
(iii) As per wave theory of light, when light falls on the surface of the metal , the energy of incident light is
absorbed by a large number of electrons , so the energy absorbed per electron will be very small. Thus , each
electron will take some time to have enough energy to come out of the metallic surface.
In other words , there is a time delay between the light falling on the metallic surface and the emission of
electrons from the metallic surface.
But , it is observed that electrons are emitted from the metallic surface as soon as light is incident on it,
i..e this process is instantaneous.
Thus , wave theory is unable to explain the basic facts of photoelectric effect.

Q.1: What is photoelectric effect ? Why it cannot be explained on the basis of wave nature of light ?
