1.0 INTRODUCTION
This document represents the relay settings for 11kV and 3.3kV Switchboards of
OBRA “C” 2x660 MW THERMAL POWER EXTENSION PROJECT.
2.0 OBJECTIVE
The Relay setting and Coordination analysis is conducted to recommend the relay settings
and achieve proper coordination between relays installed in 11kV and 3.3kV Switchboards
for various type of feeders i.e. Incomer, Bus coupler, motor feeders and transformer
feeders.
The Relay coordination study is performed to determine various relay settings under
normal operating condition and to ensure:
a. Sensitivity to over current and earth faults under minimum and maximum fault
conditions.
b. Selectivity of relays
c. Stability for non-operating conditions
In this system 11kV AHP Panel energized through Station switchgear by 2R/Phase, 1C,
11kV, XLPE 630 sq.mm. 480 m cable. This panel further power distributing to Various
Distribution transformer like 9MVA 11/3.45 kV, 2MVA 11/0.415kV, 1.6MVA11/0.415kV,
1.25MVA 11/0.415kV and 0.5MVA 11/0.433 kV distribution Transformers. 3.3kV AHP
switchgear receiving power from 9MVA 11/3.45kV transformer and further feeds to various
motor feeders.

Relay Co-ordination study has been perform based on protection philosophy of NTPC.
Relay coordination study has been performed in ETAP Software (Electric Transient
Analyzer Program, OTI Inc, USA).
Back-up protection for O/C and E/F has been considered up to one level only.

MOTOR START-UP SUPERVISION
The motor startup supervision function STTPMSU is designed for protection against excessive starting time and locked rotor conditions of the motor during starting. During the startup
period of the motor, STTPMSU calculates the integral of the I²t value. If the calculated value exceeds the set value, the operate signal is activated.
STTPMSU also protects the motor from an excessive number of startups. Upon exceeding the specified number of startups within certain duration, STTPMSU blocks further starts. The
restart of the motor is also inhibited after each start and continues to be inhibited for a set duration. When the lock of start of motor is enabled, STTPMSU gives the time remaining
until the restart of the motor.

even if we take a I starting current at 100% Voltage and the starting time of 80% Voltage then also the product is less than the minimum locked rotor time capability of the motor. SO we can set
the starting time of Motor at 80% of voltage and starting current at 100% Voltage

The loss of load supervision LOFLPTUC is used to detect a sudden load loss which is considered as a fault condition. LOFLPTUC starts when the current is less than the set limit. It
operates with the definite time (DT) characteristics, which means that the function operates after a predefined operate time and resets when the fault current disappears.
The function contains a blocking functionality. It is possible to block function outputs, the definite timer or the function itself, if desired.

Thermal overload protection for motors : MPTTR
The motor thermal overload protection function MPTTR protects the electric motors from overheating. MPTTR models the thermal behavior of motor on the basis of the measured
load current and disconnects the motor when the thermal content reaches 100 percent.
MPTTR prevents an electric motor from drawing excessive current and overheating, which causes the premature insulation failures of the windings and, in worst cases, burning out of
the motors.

Motor load jam protection
The stalled motor protection JAMPTOC is used for protecting the motor in stall or mechanical jam situations during the running state. The function starts when the measured current
exceeds the breakdown torque level, that is, above the set limit. The operation characteristic is definite time.

The unbalance protection based on the negative-sequence current function MNSPTOC protects electric motors from phase unbalance. A small voltage unbalance can produce a large

Note: As per the side table for Starting Current /time and Locked rotor current and Time the Maximum I^2 T is 36 wheras the capability of Minimum Locked rotor time is 522. So looking in to this
even if we take a I starting current at 100% Voltage and the starting time of 80% Voltage then also the product is less than the minimum locked rotor time capability of the motor.

MPTTR prevents an electric motor from drawing excessive current and overheating, which causes the premature insulation failures of the windings and, in worst cases, burning out of
the motors.
