Midterms Problem set 1

Answer the following problem. Provide a clear and neat solution and proper illustration (if
applicable) no solution means wrong. Express your final answer in three decimal places.

Situation 1. A saturated 100 cm^3 clay sample has a natural water content of 30%. It is
found that the shrinkage limit occurs when the water content is 19%. If the specific gravity
of soil is 2.70. Determine the following.
1. Shrinkage ratio of clay
2. Dry unit weight of sample
3. Volumetric shrinkage of the soil sample.

Situation 2, A cubic meter of soil fits hat state weighs 17.5 kN. After oven drying the soil
weighs 14.2 kN. Assume that sg is 2.70. Determine the following
1. Moisture content
2. Void ratio in %
3. Saturated unit weight
4. Degree of saturation
5. Dry unit weight

Situation 3. The moist unit weights and degree of saturation of soil are given in the following
table:
γ (pcf) Degree of Saturation in %
105.73 50
112.67 75
Determine the following
1. Void ratio
2. Specific Gravity
3. Porosity
4. Saturated unit weight

Situation 4. The void ratio of a soil is 0.85. What is the percentage error of the bulk unit
weight if the soil were 95% saturated and assumed to be totally saturated?

Situation 5. The following data were obtained from the Atterberg limit test for a soil
Liquid limit = 41%
Plastic limit = 21.1%

1. What is the plasticity index of the soil?

2. If the situ moisture content of the soil is 30% what is the liquidity index of the soil?
3. What would be the nature of the soil

Situation 6. A sample of sand has a relative density of 40% with a solid specific gravity of
2.65. The minimum void ratio is 0.45 and the max. void ratio is 0.97.
1. Determine the void ratio of the sand at a relative densitiy of 40%
2. What is density of this sand in a saturated condition
3. If the sand is compacted to a relative density of 65%. What will be the decrease in
thickness of a 4ft thick layer.

Situation 7. A soil sample has a mass of 1830g taken from the field having a volume of
1x10-3 m^#. It has
a sp. gr. of 2.60 and a water content of 10%. Values of emax = 0.62 and emin= 0.43
a. Compute the dry unit weight
b. Compute the void ratio
c. Compute the relative density

Situation 8. A granular soil located in a borrow pit is found to have an in place dry density of
1895 kg/. In the laboratory, values of dry maximum density are determined as 2100 kg/ and
1440 kg/, respectively.
a. Compute the relative density of the soil in the borrow pit
b. Compute the void ratio of the soil in the natural condition if the maximum and minimum
densities indicate void ratios of 0.28 at the max density and 0.92 at minimum density.
c. Compute the specific gravity of this soil.

Situation 9. The following data shows the results of the liquid Limit and Plastic Limit Test.

Situation 10.

Situation 11.

Situation 12. The dry density of a sand with porosity of 0.387 is 1600 kg/m^3. Determine
the following
1. Void ration in %
2. Specific gravity of soil
3. Effective density of soil in kg/m^3

Situation 13. A wet soil has a volume of 4.85x10^-4 m^3 and weighs 8.5 N. After oven
drying the weight reduces to 7.5 N. Use Gs = 2.7. Determine the following
1. Dry unit weight
2. Wet unit weight
3. Moisture content in %
4. Degree of saturation in %

Situation 14. A sandy soil has natural water content of 27.5% and bulk unit weight of 19.2
kN/m^3. The void ratio corresponding to the loosest and densest are 0.51 and 0.87. Assume
Gs = 2.7.
1. What is the in Situ void ratio of the soil in%
2. What is the relative density of the soil in %

Situation 15. In a liquid limit test using cup apparatus, the following data were taken:

Sample Water content% No. of blows

1 41.8 39
2 43.5 23
3 44.3 20
4 45.5 13

While the plastic limit test the following values were observed.
Wt of wet soil + container =21.19 grams
Wt of dry soil + container = 18.78 grams
Wt of container = 8.20 grams
Determine the following
1. Liquid limit
