TUTORIAL 3-2 (Stiochiometry)

1. What is reaction stoichiometry? What is the significance of the coefficient in a

balanced chemical equation?
2. In the chemical reaction, what is the limiting reactant? The theoretical yield? The
percent yield? What do we mean when we say a reactant is in excess?
3. The percent yield is normally calculated using actual yield and theoretical yield in
units of mass (g or kg). Would the percent yield be different if the actual yield and
theoretical yield were in units of moles?
4. Define and give one example of each type of reaction
(a) precipitation reaction
(b) gas evolution reaction
(c) Combustion reaction
(d) Neutralization reaction
(e) Redox reaction
5. Write a balanced equation of the reaction
(a) Iron reacts with oxygen to form iron(III) oxide
(b) Nitrogen monoxide reacts with oxygen to form nitrogen dioxide
(c) Calcium carbide reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide and acethylene gas
(d) Magnesium carbonate added to hydrochloric acid to produce magnesium oxide,
carbon dioxide and water
(e) Calcium hydroxide reacts with sulfuric acid to form calcium sulfate and water
(f) Silver nitrate solution added to sodium chloride solution will give white
precipitate of silver chloride
6. Determine the oxidation state of the underline atom in the following compound
a. S8 b. VO2+ c. S2O82- d. C22- e. CrO42-
7. Balance the equation below and identify the reaction which undergo redox process
(a) Mg(OH)2 + HBr → MgBr2 + H2O
(b) Zn + HCl → ZnCl2 + H2
(c) SO2 + O2 → SO3
(d) Ba(NO3)2 + Na2SO4 → BaSO4 + 2NaNO3
(e) C4H10O(s) + O2(g) → CO2(g) + H2O(g)
(f) PbO2 + Cl2 + H+ → PbCl2 + Cl2 + H2O
8. Balance the equations below
(a) Fe2O3 + C → Fe + CO2
(b) NaHCO3 → Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2
(c) (NH4)3PO4 + NaOH → Na3PO4 + NH3 + H2O
(d) LiHCO3 + H2SO4 → Li2CO3 + H2O + CO2
(e) VO2+ + Sn2+ → VO2+ + Sn4+
(f) IO3- + I- + H+ → I3- + H2O
9. Consider the unbalanced equation for combustion of hexane:
C6H14(g) + O2(g) → CO2(g) + H2O(g)
Balance the equation and determine how many of O2 are required to react
completely with 7.2 moles of C6H14.
10. Consider the balanced equation:
SiO2(s) + 3C(s) → SiC(s) + 2CO(g)
Complete the table showing the appropriate number of moles of reactants and
products. If the mole reactant is provided, fill in the required mole of other reactant
as well as products and vice versa.

11. Sulphuric acid dissolves aluminium metal according to the reaction:

2Al(s) + 3H2SO4(aq) → Al2(SO4)3(aq) + 3H2(g)
Suppose you wanted to dissolve an aluminium block with the mass of 15.2 g. What
minimum mass of H2SO4 (in gram) would you need? What mass of H2 gas (in
gram) the complete reaction of the aluminium block produce?

12. For the reaction below, find the limiting reagent and amount (in gram) excess
reactant for each of the initial amounts of reactants.
2Na(s) + Br2(g) → 2NaBr(s)
(a) 2 mol Na, 2 mol Br2
(b) 20 g Na, 20 g Br2
(c) 12.6 mol Na, 6.9 mol Br2
(d) 5 g Na, 100 g Br2

13. Lead ion can be precipitated from solution with KCl according to the reaction:
Pb2+(aq) + 2KCl(aq) → PbCl2(s) + 2K+(aq)
When 28.5 g of KCl is added to a solution containing 30.7 g Pb(NO3)2 , a PbCl2
precipitate forms. The precipitate is filtered and dried and found to have a mass of
29.4 g. Determine the limiting reactant, theoretical yield of PbCl2, and percent
yield for the reaction.
