QUESTION ONE – 30 MARKS

a) Give a definition of distributed system and an example. (4 Marks)


b) Identify and state the Goals of a distributed system. (4 Marks)
c) By use of illustration, compare and contrast network operating systems and distributed
systems. (4 Marks)
d) Justify why name servers are hierarchically organized. (4 Marks)
e) Discuss any three dimensions of transparency in a distributed system. (6 Marks)
f) Differentiate between synchronous and asynchronous distributed systems process.
(4 Marks)
g) Discuss how the principle of Berkeley algorithm is used to synchronize time is a
distributed system. (4 Marks)

a) Discuss the challenges faced in the design and implementation of distributed system.
(4 Marks)
b) Distinguish between eager (all) and eager (dirty) methods of process migration.
(6 Marks)
c) Distributed systems have to be fault tolerant, evaluate the five possible scenarios of
crashes failure and how to resolve them. (10 Marks)

QUESTION THREE – 20 MARKS

a) By use of illustration explain the five models of a distributed computing system.

b) Explain why are distributed systems inherently insecure? (2 Marks)


c) Discuss and differentiate how public key and private security can be used in
distributed systems. (8 Marks)

QUESTION FOUR – 20 MARKS

a) List and describe the features of a good distributed file system. (4 Marks)
b) Discuss which consistency model is applicable in data centric approach.
(4 Marks)
c) Discuss the concurrency transaction problems encountered in a distributed
system and how they can be addressed. (12 Marks)

QUESTION FIVE – 20 MARKS

a) Using diagrams demonstrate how a remote procedure call is implemented.

b) Describe mutual exclusion problem in a distributed system and how its resolved.
(4 Marks)

c) A dimension of robustness of a distributed system is fault tolerance. Discuss


what fault tolerance is and how it can be enhanced. (4 Marks)
