Gender of Noun

• Common gender:
• Either male or female (Teacher, student, doctor, player, friend,
enemy etc.)

• Note: Common genders are considered as masculine until the


gender is clear and will be given priority using masculine
pronouns.

• for example: A patient should treat his patients properly.


Case of Noun

• Nominative Case/ Subjective Case: Noun is used as the subject

• Objective case: Noun is used as the object of the sentence.

• Possessive/ Genitive case: it is used to show ownership or belongings.

• To show possession we generally use (‘apostrophe ‘ or of’).

• For living things we use apostrophe, for non-living things we use ‘of’.
Case of Noun

• A few are examples of understanding the concept of


apostrophe with non-living as living.
• Place- India’s population.
• Time- A new year’s party.
• Idiomatic expression: at a stone’s throw.
• Personified nouns : Sun’s rays, Moon’s presence.
Possessive Case

• Nouns that end on ‘s’ are only followed by apostrophe to
show the possession
Possessive Case

• Joint Possession;

• Rahul and Keshav are brothers.


• Rahul’s and Keshav’s father is coming today
• Rahul and Keshav’s father is coming today.

• To show the joint possession we use apostrophe (’) with the


last word.
Additional Points
• Noun + preposition + noun remains singular in form hence it takes
singular verb if used as the subject.

• Door to Door is a good policy of advertisement.


• Doors to doors is a good policy of advertisement.

• Any of, each of, either of, neither of, none of, how many, one of,
a number of, the number of etc.

One of the teachers is teaching well in the Classroom.

• The Jury is united on the decision

• The Jury is divided in its opinion.
