Engine Operating Parameters
Problems shown in bold are to be solved during the tutorial session. Other problems are left for the
students to try solving them.

1. Find the bore diameter and stroke length of a 4-stroke, 6-cylinder internal combustion
engine, which develops 90 kW brake power at 3200 rpm. The air to fuel ratio is 15 and
the calorific value is 44 MJ/kg/ Assume that the thermal indicated, mechanical, and
volumetric efficiencies are 35, 90, and 50%. The ratio of the stroke to bore is 1.2 and
the ambient air is at 1 bar and 27℃. Also, find the indicated specific fuel consumption.
2. A four-cylinder, 2.4-liter engine operates on a four-stroke cycle at 3200 rpm. The
compression ratio is 9.4:1, the connecting rod length is 18 cm, and the bore to stroke
ratio is 0.9. Calculate:
a. Clearance volume of one cylinder in cm3.
b. Bore and stroke in cm.
c. Average piston speed in m/s.
3. A four-cylinder, 3-liter spark ignition engine operates on a 4-stroke cycle at 2500 rpm.
At this condition, the mechanical efficiency of the engine is 62% and 1000 J of indicated
work is produced each cycle in each cylinder. Calculate:
a. The indicated, brake, and friction mean effective pressure, in kPa.
b. The brake power in kW.
c. The torque in N.m.
4. The engine operating at the conditions in problem 3 is square (stroke length = bore).
Calculate:
a. The specific power in kW.
b. The output per displacement in kW/cm3.
c. The specific volume in cm3/kW.
d. The power lost to friction in kW.
5. Find the diameter and stroke of a 4-stroke 6-cylinder internal combustion engine,
which develops 600 kW at 1500 rpm with a mechanical efficiency of 0.85, and a brake
specific fuel consumption of 245 g/kW.hr. The fuel used is iso-octane C8H18 and the
excess air factor is 1.5. The volumetric efficiency is 80% at 1 bar and 27℃. Take L/D
= 1.2.
6. Iso-octane fuel C8H18 is supplied to a 4-stroke, six-cylinder spark ignition engine at 3
g/s. If the engine speed is 3000 rpm and the engine volume is 2000 cm 3. Estimate the
mass of fuel and air entering each cylinder per cycle for excess air ratio of 1.2. Also,
calculate the volumetric efficiency and the mean piston speed for L/D = 1.2.
7. Find the brake power for a 4-stroke 6-cylinder diesel engine at 1500 rpm with a
mechanical efficiency of 0.85 and brake specific fuel consumption of 245 g/kW.hr.
The fuel used is C8H18, the volumetric efficiency is 80% at 1 bar and 27℃. Take L/D =
1.2, L = 0.1 m, and the fuel calorific value as 42 MJ/kg.

8. An 8-cylinder 4-stroke engine operating on typical petrol C7H14 of low calorific

value of 44 MJ/kg has 70 mm bore and 100 mm stroke. It develops 89 kW at 3500
rpm. The fuel consumption is 270 g/kW.hr. Calculate the indicated power, indicated
thermal efficiency, indicated specific fuel consumption, and indicated mean effective
pressure, if the mechanical efficiency is 90%.
9. A four-cylinder, 1500 cm3 compression ignition engine operates on a 4-stroke cycle
at 3000 rpm. The engine produces 48 kW of brake power. The volumetric efficiency
of the engine is 92% and the air-fuel ratio is 21:1. Calculate:
a. The rate of air flow into the engine in kg/s.
b. The brake specific fuel consumption in g/kW.hr.
c. The brake output power per displacement in kW/l.
10. The power per unit piston area P/Ap (often called the specific work) is a measure of
the designer’s success in using the available piston area, regardless of size. Drive and
expression for P/Ap in terms of thermal efficiency, volumetric efficiency, mean piston
speed, fuel hating value, ambient air density, and fuel-air ratio for a four-stroke engine
cycle.
