Instructions: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions below. Focus on identifying the
writer’s use of language techniques and their effects.

Passage:

The sea was a seething mass of chaos, its waves battering the cliffs with relentless fury. Foam sprayed high,
shimmering like molten silver under the pale moonlight. The wind howled through the jagged rocks, a mournful
wail that spoke of ancient, unspoken sorrows. Beneath the surface, shadows twisted and danced, their dark forms
fleeting yet menacing. The briny scent of salt filled the air, mingling with the tang of seaweed and the faint,
metallic hint of approaching rain.

Section A: Language Analysis Questions

1. Imagery:
o Identify two examples of imagery in the passage. Explain the effect each has on the reader.
2. Personification:
o Find an example of personification in the passage. How does this technique contribute to the mood
of the scene?
3. Alliteration:
o Highlight any example of alliteration in the passage. What effect does this create?
4. Word Choice:
o The writer uses the phrase “shimmering like molten silver.” What does this comparison suggest
about the appearance of the foam?
5. Mood and Atmosphere:
o How does the writer create a sense of foreboding in the passage? Refer to specific words or phrases
in your answer.

Section B: Writing Task

Write a short paragraph describing a stormy night, using at least three of the following language techniques:

 Imagery
 Simile or Metaphor
 Personification
 Alliteration

Section C: Self-Assessment Checklist
