INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
➢ Attempt eight questions in section A and any five questions
from section B.
➢ Begin each answer on a fresh sheet of paper
➢ Mathematical tables with lists of formulae and squared papers
are provided.
➢ Silent, simple non-programmable scientific calculators may be
used.
➢ State the degree of accuracy at the end of each question
attempted using a calculator or tables and indicate cal for
calculator or Tab for mathematical tables.
SECTION A
1. A and B are two independent events with A twice as likely to occur
as B. If P(A) = ½, find the
(i) P (A or B but not both). (3 marks)
(ii) P(𝐴𝐵1⁄) (2 marks)

2. The numbers (𝑥=4.2, 𝑦=16.02) and Z = 2.5 are rounded off with
corresponding errors of 0.5, 0.45 and 0.02. Calculate this absolute
relative error made in 𝑥𝑦𝑧 (5 marks)

3. Show that the equation 𝜋𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥−𝑥=0 has a root between 𝜋2⁄ and 𝜋.
Hence use linear interpolation once to find the root correct to 3
significant figures. (5 marks)

4. The number of students who go to a certain school’s chapel on

Sundays is uniformly distributed between 824 to 1034 students. Find
the
(i) Mean number of students who go to the chapel (2 marks)
(ii) Probability that between 830 and 990 students go to the chapel. (3
marks)

5. Given that P(B/A) = 1/3, P(B/A1) = 5/8

and P (A1n B1) = 3/20
Find:
(i) P(A)
(ii) P(AnB1)

6. The table below shows the number of children in 100 families a

certain village during the

7. 2014 Uganda National population census.

No. of children 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
No. of families 8 9 16 25 20 12 6 4
Calculate the
(i) mean number of children per family.
(ii) Standard deviation

8. The dimensions of a rectangle are 8cm and 4.26.

(i) State the maximum possible error in each dimension.
(ii) Find the range within which the area of the rectangle lies.
(Correct to 2 decimal places) (05marks)

9. Estimate the value of

1
𝑥
∫ 𝑑𝑥
1 + 𝑥2
0
By trapezium rule using 6 ordinated (give your answer correct to 3
decimal places.) (5 marks)

SECTION B
10. The table below shows the ages of people who attended a certain
function.
Age Frequenc
(years) y
10 – 19 6
20 – 34 16
35 – 44 27
45 – 64 39
65 – 79 18
80 – 89 8

(a) Draw a cumulative frequency curve and use it to estimate the

semi- inter quartile range
(6 marks)
(b) Calculate the
(i) Mean age (3 marks)
(ii) Standard deviation (3 marks)

11. Using the graphical method, show that the equation

3x3 + x – 4 = 0 has a root between 0 and 2. Hence using the Newton –
Raphson method, find the root correct to three decimal places.
(12 marks)

12. The continuous random variable x has a probability density

function given by
f(x) = {(k2 ÷2) 𝑥2; 0≤𝑥≤2, 𝑘(4−𝑥); 2≤ 𝑥 ≤4 0 elsewhere
Where k is a constant
(a) Sketch f(x)
(b) Find the
(i) Value of k
(ii) P (1< x < 3) (4 marks)

13. The mock examination and average final examination marks of a

certain school are given in the following table.

Mock Marks 28 34 36 42 52 54 60
AV. Final Marks 54 62 68 70 76 66 74

(a) (i) Plot the marks on the scatter diagram and comment on the
relationship
between the two marks.
(ii) Draw a line of best fit and use it to predict the average final mark
of a student whose mock mark is 50. (08 marks)

14. Obtain graphically the not of the equation X3= 4.

(a) Derive the simplest iterative formula based on Newton Raphson
method that can be used to find a better approximation to the fast of
the equation above.
(b) Using the value from graph as initial approximation, find the root
of the equation
correct to four significant figures.

15. A random variable X has a cumulative distribution function given

below.
𝑥+𝑏
F(x) = {0; x ≤ 0, ax; 0 ≤× ≤ 1, ; 1 ≤× ≤ 2; 1, ×≥ 2
3
Find;
(a) the value of a and b
(b) P (X < 1.5/X> 1)
(c) Mean of X (12 marks)
