TARGET STRENGTH FOR MIX PROPORTIONING:
a) Target mean strength = fck + 1.65 S

= 25 + 1.65 X 4 = 31.6 N/mm2

fck = characteristic compressive strength at 28 days
S = Standard deviation from Table-2 of IS 10262:2019

b) Target mean strength = fck + X

= 25 + 5.5 = 30.5 N/mm2
X = factor based on grade of concrete from Table-1 of IS 10262:2019
The higher value is to be adopted. Therefore, target strength will be 31.6 N/mm 2.

APPROXIMATE AIR CONTENT

From Table 3 of IS 10262:2019, the approximate amount of entrapped air to be expected in normal (non-
air-entrained) concrete is 1.0 percent for 20 mm nominal maximum size of aggregate.

Based on experience, three trials with variation of +/- 5% of water-cement ratio have been carried out.

TRIAL-I
Maximum water-cement ratio from IS 456:2000 = 0.50 for moderate exposure condition.
From Table 4 of IS 10262:2019, water content = 186 litre (for 50 mm slump) for 20 mm aggregate.
Estimated water content for 75 mm slump = 186+186*3%=191.58 litre = 192 litre.
As admixture is used, the water content may be reduced. Based on trial, the water content reduction of 15
percent is considered. Hence the water content = 192 *85% = 163.2 litre = 164 litre.

Based on experience, adopt water-cement ratio = 0.48

Cement content = 164/0.48 = 341 Kg/m3 > 300 Kg/m3

PROPORTION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGETE CONTENT:

The proportionate volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20 mm size aggregate and fine aggregate
(Zone II) for water-cement ratio of 0.50 = 0.62.
In the present case water-cement ratio is 0.48. Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate is required to be
increased to decrease the fine aggregate content. As the water-cement ratio is lower by 0.02
the proportion of volume of coarse aggregate is increased by 0.004 (at the rate of ± 0.01 for every ± 0.05
change in water-cement ratio).
Therefore, corrected proportion of volume of coarse aggregate for the water-cement ratio of 0.48 = 0.62 +
0.004 = 0.624
Volume of fine aggregate content = 1 – 0.624 = 0.376

MIX CALCULATIONS:
The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows:
a) Total volume = 1 m3
b) Volume of entrapped air in wet concrete = 0.01 m3

Anjan Adhikary DATE: 03/12/2024

c) Volume of cement = = .
=0.1083 m3
d) Volume of water = 164/1000 = 0.164 m 3
e) Volume of all in aggregate = [(a-b)-(c+d)] = [(1-0.01)-(0.1083+0.164)] = 0.7177 m 3
f) Mass of coarse aggregate = Vol of all in aggregate X Volume of CA X Specific gravity of CA X 1000
= 0.7177 X 0.624 X 2.79 X 1000 = 1249.49 Kg  1250 Kg
g) Mass of fine aggregate = Vol of all in aggregate X Volume of FA X Specific gravity of FA X 1000
= 0.7177 X 0.376 X 2.73 X 1000 = 736.7 Kg  737 Kg

MIX PROPORTIONS FOR TRIAL MIX (SSD CONDITION):

Cement = 341 Kg/m3
Water = 164 Kg/m3
Fine aggregate = 737 Kg/m3
Coarse aggregate = 1250 Kg/m3
Free water-cement ratio = 0.48

NOTE — Aggregates shall be used in saturated surface dry condition. If otherwise, when computing the
requirement of mixing water, allowance shall be made for the free (surface) moisture contributed by the
fine and coarse aggregates. On the other hand, if the aggregates are dry, the amount of mixing water shall
be increased by an amount equal to the moisture likely to be absorbed by the aggregates. Necessary
adjustments are also required to be made in mass of aggregates. The surface water and percentage water
absorption of aggregates shall be determined according to IS 2386.

Based on experience, adopt water-cement ratio = 0.45

Cement content = 164/0.45 = 364.44 Kg/m3  365 Kg/m3 > 300 Kg/m3
