17CE2204 - SOIL MECHANICS (Assignment I)

UNIT-I
TOPIC : PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SOIL
1 A moist sample compacted into a mould of 1000 cm3 capacity and weight 35 N, weighs 53N
with the mould. A representative sample of soil taken from it has an initial weight of 0.20 N
and oven dry weight of 0.17N. Determine i) wet density ii) void ratio
2 A partially saturated soil sample has a natural water content of 15 % and Bulk unit weight of
20 kN/m3. Compute the Degree of saturation, void ratio and Porosity.
3 In a field exploration, a sample was collected in a sampling tube of internal diameter 50 mm
below the ground water table. The length of the sample was 102 mm and its mass was 387g.
The mass of dried sample was 313 g. Find the porosity, degree of saturation and dry density
of the sample. Specific gravity of solids is 2.7.
4 A soil has a bulk unit weight of 20 kN/m 3 at a water content of 16 %. Calculate the porosity,
degree of saturation, if specific gravity is 2.65. Also find the air content and % air voids
present in it.

17CE2204 - SOIL MECHANICS (Assignment II)

UNIT II
Topic: PLASTICITY CHARACTERISTICS
1 If natural water content, liquid limit and plastic limit of soil are 24%, 68% and 28%
respectively, and percentage of particles less than 2 micron is 23%, determine (i) Liquidity
Index (ii) Activity (iii) Consistency Index.
2 A soil has a liquid limit of 25 % and flow index of 12.5 %. If the plastic limit is 15 %.
Determine the plasticity index and toughness index. If the water content of the soil in its
natural condition in the field is 20 %, find the liquidity index and the relative consistency.
TOPIC : IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF SOIL
3 The following data refers to the results of tests on soil:
• % soil retained on 75 micron sieve = 80 %
• % coarse fraction retained on 4.75 mm sieve = 40 %
• Liquid limit = 58 %
• Plastic limit = 23 %
• Uniformity coefficient = 3.5
• Coefficient of curvature = 1.1
Classify the soil according to ISI.

4 A soil sample is found to have the following properties:

Passing 75 sieve =9%
Passing 4.75 mm sieve = 70 %
Uniformity coefficient =8
Coefficient of curvature = 2.6
Plasticity index = 10 %
Liquid limit = 28 %
Classify the soil according to IS soil classification system.

17CE2204 - SOIL MECHANICS (Assignment III)

UNIT III
COMPACTION OF SOILS
1 Plot the compaction curve and determining the optimum moisture content and maximum dry
density for the following data. Also plot ZAVD line. Volume of mould = 1000 cm3 , weight
of the mould = 900 g, G = 2.65
Water content (%) 8.5 12.2 13.75 15.5 18.2 20.2
Weight of mould + Wet soil (g) 2700 2840 2900 2950 2930 2880
2 A cohesive soil yields a maximum dry density of 18 kN/m3 at an optimum moisture content
of 16 % during Standard Proctor’s Test. if the specific gravity of solids is 2.65, what is the
degree of saturation? What is the theoretical maximum dry density it can be obtained.
